i'm surprised the sticking point was the final 3 years; the final 3 years just lowers AAV which help from a payroll flexibility standpoint (aka helps us land trout). and also with the final 3 years of a 13-year contract, the amount of money he will be making won't be that much at all due to inflation- it (the last 3 years) is a small price to pay for a franchise player.

i'm also surprised the giants just decided to swoop in and offer 12 years so late in the game. where did they come from? they must have been motivated by the threat of the dodgers getting him. i'm glad we were able to top them- they must have been a tempting destination for harper, given "west coast".

all in all, it just goes to show that you can't believe the rumors (unless this is all just spin to make harper look less greedy/picky and temper the animosity that was growing toward him and boras up until 24 hours ago). it apparently wasn't the "opt outs" (allegedly not wanting to play in philly) or the "$$$" (alleged greed) that was the sticking point, but rather length of contract. interesting.
