This wouldn't happen if they would just stay off my lawn.

But really, I think it's ok for me to dislike the "I just stopped their runner for only a 3 yard gain" celebrations. It's ridiculous.

A few misc. responses to the above conversation:

* These rule changes are all about pace, not game length. The MLB's SVP for Economics & Ops literally says "One of our principle objectives is to reduce the amount of dead time in games" in the article. I don't think anyone can objectively argue that the pace of the game has slowed to a crawl. Glad to see the MLB legitimately exploring ways to fix it.

* MLB (and NFL) should be more worried about the NBA, whose average fan is only 42. Ratings are (way) down this year with LeBron moving out west + being out for several weeks, but overall they are crushing it with younger fans.

* This quote is spot on:
“The game has undergone changes throughout its history, but it’s been locked into its current configuration since the DH was introduced in the 1970s,” White said. “Meanwhile, in every other popular team sport we’re aware of, rules change year by year by year. Part of baseball’s charm is the resolution to stay the same, but in the world we’re living in now, with the difference between pitchers and hitters, things don’t have to stay the same.”

I don't have a problem with them making some common sense changes to try to improve pace.

I was looking at first round draft picks and noticed that Mike Trout--barring something unusual--is about to become the most valuable (by B-Ref WAR) position player drafted in the 1st round since 1994. Trout has 64.3 WAR.

So, who is the current leader among position players drafted in the first round from 1994 to present?

[Reveal] Spoiler:
"The Man" w/ 65.4 WAR, which is the highest WAR for any 1st round position player since ARod in 1993.

As awesome as Utley was, it took him 16 years to accumulate roughly the same WAR Trout has in 7+. That's how good Trout is.

Yep, it really emphasizes how transcendent Trout is. At the same time, there's a few guys drafted in that timeframe (notably Mauer and Posey) who are debated for the Hall of Fame and will never (or it's very unlikely) pass Utley.

It seems like Posey is almost a lock. He must have a hell of a PR guy. The injury may have actually helped him. And the Giants winning a few WS also helped.

Apparently MLB and MLBPA have agreed to end August trades.

https://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/17349 ... um=ios_app

Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association have agreed to eliminate the August waiver trade period in favor of a single non-waiver trade deadline day for all transactions on July 31, sources told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The deadline-day change, one of several rule changes expected to be ratified by both the league and union after extensive negotiations this spring, will take effect this season.

Also increasing roster size to 26 in 2020 and shortening the break between innings.

Quick, what is the cost of a 1 minute commercial between innings during a game and what is the cost in a regular show after a game?

If the latter is more expensive or if there are more commercials in the show after the game, then they do indeed make more money by shortening the time between innings, smart guy.

I can't wait to win all your money in our pay league. I'm going to take it and spend it frivolously in ways you would disapprove. This is the year the worm turns, my friend.

Supposedly Clark claims MLBPA didn't agree to the 3-batter minimum change

The 3-batter rule has not been written in full yet because it is not in use until 2020, but as currently understood it would apply to extra innings and the postseason. My concern, especially in playoffs, is that in huge spot a pitcher will come in and, say, walk 2 straight on 8 pitches and be forced to stick in for another and potentially determine huge/games titles based on the rule, when the pitcher clearly doesn't have it and should be removed quicker.

I don't see why not. It is a stupid rule change.

This is the mentality that led to the 3 batter rule even becoming a potential necessity, no?

Baseball has been micromanaged down to every possible factor, which is why we see a carousel of pitchers every night and have to experience the associated drain of pace from the game itself.

To be clear, I'm not saying the 3 batter rule is the answer but I'm largely in favor of anything that helps reverse some of that. A batter minimum, less/no warmup pitches from the mound, whatever.

It just seems like there must be a better way to cut down on the number of relievers used without forcing a pitcher to face 3 batters. And you want to give them the benefit of the doubt but then you think of how they screwed up with the 10 day DL.
