The golf thread - A tradition like many others

Tiger Woods is leading something called the Zozo Championship in Japan by 3 strokes with 7 holes to play. Play was suspended and will be resumed around 6:30 this evening our time. Apparently this counts as a PGA tour win, so if he holds on he would tie Sam Snead for a record 82.

And he did it!

He looked in mid season form, too. His putting is so much better than it was 18 months ago.

Feel like this cinches him picking himself for one of the Presidents Cup wild card slots.

He really shouldn't. He is already the captain, has to play 4 rounds the week before in the Bahamas, then fly to Australia and play practice rounds and compete? I think he should just worry about being Captain and let the more deserving people play.

With all respect to the Zozo, I am not sure he should jump guys that finished in front of him because he won a tournament in Japan. This is already the 2020 season and I would think he would use the 2019 season to determine who deserves to play.

With all that said I wouldn't be surprised if he does it.

As a fan I'd rather he was playing on the team--makes it fun to watch in many respects.

And the "Zozo" tournament had a pretty solid field for an early season PGA event: Matsuyama, McIlroy, Woodland, Schauffle, Bradley, Casey, Reed, Thomas, Day, Fleetwood, Cabrera-Bell, Grillo, Garcia, Sabbatini, Scott, Na, Watson, Finau, Kisner, Speith... etc.

I just don't think it would be right to pick himself over someone who had a better qualifying season for the President's cup. He is still going to get a lot of tv time, would hate for him to leave off a young guy so he can play.

Tiger picks himself, Woodland, Finau and Reed.

No Speith, Fowler or Mickelson.

Most surprised about Fowler

Tiger's the GOAT, won the 2018 Tour Championship, The Masters, and now the Zozo (against an actually decent, though limited field). He's #7 in the OWGR. He absolutely deserved it if he wanted to pick himself if he's feeling well...which he seems to be after the knee scope. Fowler might have a case but can't blame Tiger here. Thought he'd probably pick Rickie over Reed but I think Tiger just likes how amped up Reed gets for these things.

I'm sorry that Mickelson's run as a great golfer seems to be over. He was absolutely the most fun guy to root for. Greatness, and unbelievable risk-taking. He would attempt unmakeable shots, and actually make them most of the time, or at least it seemed he did.

Saw somewhere that Rickie hasn't played since the Tour Championship after getting married.

Koepka is injured and can't go and Rickie Fowler gets added to take his place.

Hope Ricky practices...

How did Koepka get injured?

Not really. He (likely) purposefully cheated to give himself a far better lie. His ball was practically buried before he dug it out. And it's apparently not the first time he's been caught doing this. No different than doctoring a baseball and even worse in a sport where self-policing is taken so seriously.

Gonna assume it was Brandel who can go pretty overboard but a two stroke penalty isn't really enough...dude should be suspended. Matt Every is suspended for 3 months for taking doctor prescribed medical marijuana!
