golf in my adult life exists bc of tiger woods. he is infinitely more compelling and talented than sergio garcia.

I only watch golf because of Tiger Woods. Yesterday meant a lot. I always wanted one more major for him and he did it and it was magical.

Agreed. It was the biggest golf event of this decade by far.

Two years ago Tiger could only hit 60 yard shots. He shot an 85 at the memorial. He was dunking 100 yard shots against children at golf course openings. He couldn't even chip the ball because he couldn't stand over it. He needed a nerve block so he could sit in a chair at the champions dinner two years ago where he told everyone he was done.

He just won his 5th green jacket. It is amazing.

Fun fact. Sergio has more titles than VaTech.

Anyway, I don't deny Tiger's greatness even a little. Or that yesterday was amazing.

Sergio winning was a cool moment and I was rooting for him.

This is just on a different stratosphere. This is 1B to Jack in 86's 1A, and I don't remember Jack so...

It was impressive with the level of competition. 15 years ago a performance like that and he wins by 5 strokes. Field is so much stronger now than when he was dominating, and a lot of the reason it is stronger is because of the young guys that grew up watching him.

He played smart golf at the right time. Final round scores of the last three groups.

Schauffele 68
Woods 70
Koepka 70
Simpson 70
Finau 72
Kuchar 72
Harding 72
Poulter 73
Molinari 74

Only beat by one guy. Pretty impressive.

@Daniel_Rapaport
You can count on one hand the times Sports Illustrated (@SInow) has gone with a wordless cover. The Miracle on Ice comes to mind. It’s saved for truly special moments. This was one of them.

So Tiger, Miracle, and Mickey Mantle's death have been the only wordless covers.

I think my appreciation for Tiger has grown with my realization that Phil is a seriously shady dude that gets a free pass on way worse personal conduct than Tiger. Tiger did overcome really bad injuries so there's that. Perhaps this will sound dumb but I kinda think Sergio at long last finally winning a major in 2017 was a more compelling moment than Tiger winning his umpteenth but that's me.

Sergio's big story line was being maybe the greatest golfer NEVER to win a major. By actually winning my level of interest in him dropped from mild to below zero. Worst thing he could do.

trump just wants golfers to love him.

its funny bc maybe when its all over he deserves to get one. i dont know. but he is still playing and has some pretty iffy past stuff. but this is clearly about trumps ego. love it.

He's not getting the Presidential Medal of Honor from "Trump," he's getting it from the sitting President of the United States. Sometimes you have to separate the country and the office and the honor from the man.

I'm not a Trump fan at all, but I hope he accepts.

This might seem weird, but Tiger's win reminded me a bit of the US Men's Curling gold medal, because both were about guys who had something to prove.

There are other elements here operating as well--it's not just redemption, it's a huge athletic victory by someone over 40. Old guys love that stuff.

Weirdly too, until now, there was a sense that Tiger's career was somewhat disappointing. At first, most thought he'd break the record for most majors, but he hasn't really gotten close. (And really, I think it's still unlikely that he'll get another 4 or 5 majors to break or tie Nicklaus's record.) But this one win in some sense removes the sting a bit.

He needs 3 to tie now. 18-15.

Idk he just won the last one and got 2nd in the one before that. Wouldn’t be crazy, or at least, much crazier than what has already happened.
Two days later I get a text back that says I'm a basketball player and a businessman, not a Thundercat.
