2017-18 Flyers Season II: Rookie Ds and Upper-Body Injuries

With some of the usual playoff contenders out of the race, I wonder if the Flyers beat Columbus and Ottawa before the deadline if Hextall gets more aggressive at the deadline.

They're probably looking to add something else, but who knows what. They moved Stolarz off the books and traded another potential pick for Detroit to retain salary on Mrazek. They seem to want to be as flexible as possible to make a move.

Promote Sanheim, keep Lindblom up. That's all I'm hoping for

I'd rather bring in some Vets and try to make a playoff run if the price is right. No high picks or prospects for rentals but if it become's a buyers market maybe they can add someone to help.

ESPN Power Rankings:

11. Philadelphia Flyers
Record: 31-19-10
Week 19 Ranking: No. 10

The Flyers already addressed their biggest area of need (goaltending) in acquiring Petr Mrazek from the Detroit Red Wings. While Philly is (quite incredibly) poised for the playoffs, maybe now is the time to go for a big name.

Not sure what is so "incredible" about the Flyers making the playoffs. They are a talented team that has played great hockey since the beginning of the year, with 32 points earned out of 42 total possible. If not for the 10-game losing streak (with five of those in OT/SO), the Flyers would be running away with the division.

Lindblom is more talented than any vet Hextall would be willing to acquire imo. He had to trade for a goalie, I doubt he pushes even more chips in.

I don't have the numbers but I am guessing not many teams make the playoffs with a 10 game losing streak in the season. Could be wrong.

I like Lindblom but at age 21 I don't think he is better than all players they could get. I am not saying push the chips in, but if you can add a vet go for. Someone like Evander Kane who will be an UFA or Grabner or maybe Vanek.

Are we cup contenders? Probably not. We are already ahead of schedule and trading high end picks for this team doesn't fit Hextalls mantra of patience. Feels like we are a year away from seriously competing.

That's why I said don't trade high end picks or prospects. If there is a Mrazek type deal available for a Forward or Dman then I am saying they should do it. To me it feels like a buyer's market.

wouldn't characterize them as ahead of schedule.

You thought they'd be competing for a division title this year? I sure didn't

should be further along but poor decisions at nhl level have hindered them.

I hear ya but that losing streak was three months ago. I think they have proven over that time that the losing streak was an aberration. Again, they did manage to get a point in five of those ten losses and they have lost a total of 11 games since then (three in SO). Don't really care all that much, just thought it was a little harsh considering the Flyers have been one of the best teams in the league since the streak ended. "Quite incredibly" had too much of a Mike Milbury tone to it for my taste.

Such as?

He's acquired draft picks and cap flexibility. We are younger and faster than when he took over. He whiffed on Weise and that's about it. Unless you want to rehash the Schenn debate?

nope, that's a futile effort with you. think he could have done more to make the team better all around. bottom 6 is bad. defense is hagg and three dregs after the top pairing. goaltending is mediocre, but that's more of a league wide problem. glad the top 6 is carrying them for the time being.
