He was flying VFR over water. He could have lost spacial awareness which is a more common cause of VFR accidents over the ocean. If he was performing a turn it's possible he lost his horizon. So sad.

inexperienced pilot, just like Lidle. Time will tell what happened, but that sounds most likely.

It'll be interesting. The lead engineer of the aircraft was also killed while flying one in the spring.

cringed a bit when i saw this tweet last week
Roy Halladay‏ @RoyHalladay Oct 31
I keep telling my dad flying the Icon A5 low over the water is like flying a fighter jet! His response..... I am flying a fighter jet!!

judging from some of his pics it looks like you can land it in water. i wonder if he was attempting to do something like that as it was reportedly in shallow water not far off the coast.

therealchaseutley My heart hurts writing this. I can still remember the first day we met. It was 5:45am on the first day of spring training when I arrived. He was finishing his breakfast but his clothes were soaking wet. I asked if it was raining when he got in. He laughed and said “No I just finished my workout” I knew right then- he was the real deal. Thank you Roy for allowing us to witness what it takes to be the best. We will all miss you.

I saw that tweet earlier too. It's a known area for low altitude flying.

Went with Werthless and old friend Harpua to the 2010 opener in DC, the first game he ever pitched for us. It was one of the most genuinely enjoyable moments I think I've ever experienced as a sports fan. The stadium was packed with Phillies fans, and we had this new guy on the mound who happened to be the best fucking pitcher in baseball. We bludgeoned them. Halladay was awesome. Everyone was joyous, the team felt unstoppable and untouchable with our new ace.

He gave us some great moments. Gah.

Thanks for changing the header at the top of the page. I'd like to see it kept there for a while.
Doc was the symbol of the Phillies for a short era. It would be great if the newbies could carry on with his spirit. He was the ultimate player/person in so many ways.
