Hunter Pence has had quite a career since leaving the Phillies. The so-called "smart" Phillies fans couldn't get him out of Philly fast enough.

he was basically the only movable contract worth anything for an old, injured team that had nothing in the farm system. Keeping him would have gotten us to 79 wins this year. That would be much better!

We actually played really well after those trades, creeping to within three games of the playoffs in late September. But it's hard to say what effect those guys would have had here, and both played poorly with their new teams

Would have been nice to at least get something in return, but there's been some bad luck with Joseph

Pence was a lot better in 2011 than I remember him being, but he kinda sucked in 2012 and I just couldn't stand watching the way he played. Plus that year was the beginning of the end, so I rather irrationally blame him for it. Victorino could be frustrating, but always loved that guy. WFC

Yeah he was a beast for us until that game where he was moving weirdly in the outfield, which turned out to be a hernia.

I think the trade was partly salary dump part "He's not stepping up with Utley/Howard out!" mentality in the front office. There were similar rumblings about Werth in 2010, which wasn't really true

It was partly a salary dump. If they hadn't made those moves they'd have had to pay luxury tax that year.

Pence basically played one full year for us and put up a 126 OPS+. It would be nice to have one of those guys. I can understand being pissed off at what was given up for him or what was received back, but they got a quality offensive guy on a team that needed it.
