It was actually smart to save them there.

Ever since it has become the style (I think because of a rule change) to ice the kicker by calling that time out riiiiiiight before the snap so that the kicker actually winds up having to boot it twice (when I was a kid “icing the kicker” just meant taking a timeout and making him wait forty seconds to make the kick), I think icing is always the right move.

I also hate that they allow the time out to come from the sideline like they do which in turn makes the time out he instant before the snap and the two kick process to make a field goal possible. To me it is the definition of unsportsmanlike conduct.
