Random Thoughts, NO-POOP-EDITION

We need a thread where people talk about poop so I can ignore it.

(except for funny poop stories like beez & mcneal!)

Finished watching No Direction Home last night. Lots of col footage. Ends with a brief reference to the motorcycle accident and the introduction of The band.

they don't sing this song, but i'm reminded of it anyway.

I'm at a buffalo wild wings Shreveport while the lady vultures shop. The bartender sort of sucks in that he keeps disappearing and lacks anything resembling a personality. Are my expectations too high?

I've always loved the camerawork Scorcese used on introducing The Staple Singers and Mavis in particular. She was so adorable and charming back then.

fireworks are the new market overefficiency

seriously they're everywhere now. we've had a couple details where people had fireworks at weddings. A friend's brother owns the local pyrotechnica, who does the shows at CBP & Great Adventure and tons of other stuff. A standard small 10 minute show is like $5K.

Cartography has always intrigued me, and now I want to do some mapping for the fire company so I figured I might as well dive in head first...

we've started doing some GIS stuff to map our ecology data and it's really great. I'm probably where you are right now in terms of knowledge, but I share your enthusiasm. There are online courses you can take for nothing or very little. After I finish the "Internet of Things" specialization on Coursera, I was thinking of taking the GIS specialization.

https://www.coursera.org/specializations/gis

They have other courses on the subject. Sometimes the courses are a bit too simplistic, but I usually learn a good bit. If nothing else, they are good starting points.

Ahh well, I'd had checked out that Coursera thing, but it started last week. I declined because it was based on ArcGIS, which starts at like $2K. But I now just learned that I can get a free version through their "nonprofit" offering. They even have pre-packed models for fire company mapping! Maybe I'll go sign up now. I think it's all pre-recorded stuff and I'm permitted to catch up. But I'm gonna wait until ArcGIS approves my license before dropping the $49 on Coursera...

Got a couple books in the interim:

GIS for Dummies, which I've spent a lot of the day reading, and in which I learned about the ESRI/ArcGIS Fire Service model. And a bunch of other stuff. Boy GIS is really really really complex. I hope I can do the stuff I need to do without having to get a master's!!

Also GeGetting Started With GIS Using QGIS . May be a bad purchase after now being able to use ArcGIS, but I bought the kindle edition and only paid $10. And to think I was having great buyer's remorse today because I really prefer hardcopy!

I also have Google Maps: Power Tools for Maximizing the API being delivered tomorrow. There's some stuff I want to code in Python with their API (outside of creating physical maps) and this seemed like a pretty good place to start.

I really need to hit the powerball so I can quit my day job!!!!
