we've started doing some GIS stuff to map our ecology data and it's really great. I'm probably where you are right now in terms of knowledge, but I share your enthusiasm. There are online courses you can take for nothing or very little. After I finish the "Internet of Things" specialization on Coursera, I was thinking of taking the GIS specialization.

They have other courses on the subject. Sometimes the courses are a bit too simplistic, but I usually learn a good bit. If nothing else, they are good starting points.
