Republicans may be stuck with Trump:

I have to think they realize this, and they're simply trying to save as many down ballot races as possible.

And, really, the whole "drop out" narrative is being entirely driven by Republicans trying to save themselves. This isn't something especially outrageous for Trump. As JH pointed out, it's a pile on. If this hadn't come out, Trump's debate performance or whatever was next would be having the same effect.

Trump is supposedly in a meeting in Trump tower with Sessions, Newt, and someone else. Sessions wants him to resign.

Guys, despite what he says, I think he might. I can't imagine his ego can handle the absolute drubbing he is now going to take.

well, Hilldawg's wall street speeches were released by wikileaks (at least they are purported to be hers). nothing earth shattering, as evidenced by lack of outrage anywhere and no mention of it here, when it happened like 3 hours ago.

As a Dem, sure, I'd prefer he stay on, but honestly it doesn't matter: the election is effectively over. Hillary's turnout army won't fail (trust me), and that's all she wrote.

The calculus for the Republican Party now is this: is Trump so unhinged, so damaged as a candidate, and so laden with potential and as yet unknown controversies that just letting him ride it out will be more damaging to the brand than cutting bait and at least appearing to do something to put a stop to it would be? And would such a move help or hurt their immediate chances in down ballot races, and if the answer is "hurt," would it hurt them enough to offset the potential benefits of tanking this election to try to save the brand for future ones?

With any other candidate, this would be an absurd premise, nit even worth asking. But there are 5 weeks to go. Nobody knows what else the Clinton campaign has that they might leak, and worse, the RNC has absolutely no control over how Trump will react to anything that happens in the next 5 weeks. If he's this bad now, how bad will he be as the pressure of the actual day of the election approaches?

Moving now to "remove" Trump would in all probability make the drubbing he is going to take even worse. As it is, he's probably looking at a loss of 100-150 EVs. Split the R vote with a denomination of Trump and a write-in candidate, and you're probably looking at Hillary winning 40-45 states. Maybe more.

On the other hand, denominating Trump could be the overt act the party should have made long ago - like in 2013, after that postmortem report came out, or maybe even in 2009 - that would allow them to "reset" their image. At one time a well-planned speech from the RNC chair might have been the answer; now, de-nominating Trump could have the same effect, with the message being roughly this:

"We are Republicans. We are conservative, and we are proud. We are also a big tent party: there is room in our party for people who are more socially conservative and yet more economically center or even center-left, and for people who economically conservative but socially more progressive.

What there is no room for is for anyone who votes for us because they are the sort of person who uses racial and ethnic slurs when they think only their friends are listening. There is no room for anyone in our party who would deny another person his or her rights as an American because of their religion, or their country of origin. Although we may have disagreements about the exact nature of civil marriage contracts, there is no room in our party for people who deny gay and lesbian people their basic rights under the law, or who seek to discriminate against them in business. And of course there is no room for anyone who thinks women are merely sex objects, to be used by men as they see fit, or that men making unwelcome sexual advances - or worse - toward any woman is just boys being boys.

If you vote Republican because of who you hate, and because you think we hate them too, you are wrong. We do not hate anyone. If you are voting Republican as a way of expressing your frustration with or anger towards an ethnic, racial, or religious minority, we do not want your vote. If you vote Republican because you think women do not belong in the work place, or don't deserve to be treated with respect and dignity, we do not ask for your vote. If you are voting for Donald Trump because you are impressed by his hateful rhetoric, you are not a Republican and we ask that you do not call yourself a Republican."

Won't help this time, but could help the party to redefine itself later.

Don't know if anyone said this, but this coming right before the Town Hall debate is particularly damaging. Some citizen is going to have the courage to ask Trump (and Hillary) whether they'd commute/pardon those in prison for sexual assault/rape tomorrow night. Zugzwang you orange asshole...

EDIT: And really, it should be a RNC plant rather than a citizen.
