The failed coup in Turkey is a massive issue.

The military is the secular (was?) force that would roll back the religious backed parties and even overthrow governments from time to time. It looks like the end of the Ataturk era to me. Very, very bad news.

No idea how this is going to affect our relations, probably not very well since Erdogan has already claimed we were behind it. NATO is another organization that doesn't need any more pillars rotting out from under it, if the Turks left it would be catastrophic for NATO since they are the leading edge of the Moslem refugee crisis.

Over the longer term, if Turkey continues to become more Islamist as a government, we might see a return to the dueling Sunni houses...the Ottomans on one hand and the Saudis on the other. More intrigues within intrigues, more possibilities to turn them on each other.

As for peace in our lifetime, forget about it. The mid-90s were the closest thing any of us will ever see. We're much closer to 1913 than 2013 as well.
