I think it matters in terms of narrative-building, for example Ted Cruz's "mine is the only campaign that has beaten Donald Trump, that will have beaten Donald Trump, that is beating Donald Trump, that must be beating Donald Trump, that will think about beating Donald Trump," etc. The more states he can say he "won," the more he can trot out that line, and the more compelling it becomes.

Conversely, if, as I think will be the case tonight, if he doesn't put up "wins," Trump has a counter.
