yessir.

I'd just underscore that the people WIlliamson would crush under his reactionary printing press's rollers shouldn't huddle under their leaking conceptual tin roof either - they need to get out, and think "out", and not get suckered by morer drumpfian nonsense. That's harder - seeing what's next, instead of sentimentalizing what was.
Yes, but in a double utley you can put your utley on top they other guy's utley, and you're the winner. (Swish)

oh for fuck's sake. if you spent a tenth of the time you devote to kicking those who are already down to considering ways to goose the comfortable, you'd waste at least 10% less of your time here on earth. You could start on ways to trim corporate welfare.

But on that article, the best - and by best I mean the bizarrely worst - is found in so many of the comments. Whew, those people have already broken out the riding crops and the knee-high boots

The article is a form of bullying and victim blaming. But it's a trope that the left engages in as well--consider Obama's infamous "clinging to their God and guns" comment. There's a contempt many elites have for low income rural whites and it privileges no particular ideology.

But even so there are huge problems here. All the discussion has been around which particular prejudice we want to indulge rather than asking some questions of fact. First of all, of low income rural whites, how many of them voted at all, and of those who do vote how many vote Republican? Are they really the base the Republican party has depended on all these years? Even controlling for race, lower income has for a long time been correlated with voting Democratic. Now maybe for rural counties the relationship is different, but I'd like to see evidence. The typical Republican voter is a middle/upper-income suburban white.

Then of course we have the question of the extent to which low income rural whites are dependent on government--and keep in mind, it's likely that some people on disability might choose to live in a rural area because the cost of living is lower. What's the rate of drug abuse addiction and so forth. (And believe me I'm well aware that these social pathologies do exist in rural areas, and it's also the case that treatment for them is likely to be far less available and of lower quality that what you are going to find in urban and suburban areas. And recall, measuring dysfunction is a rather dodgy prospect, as there are plenty of affluent people who can literally afford various dysfunctional behaviors--they can buy their way out of consequences in the way low income people can't. So, yeah, I have a hard time taking any of this seriously without at least some attempt to look at data.

Finally, people are leaving these areas--the U-Haul solution is happening. Maybe not as quickly as Williams or TP or Doc Smooth would like, but rural population is declining everywhere.

think we're talking about the modal drumpfian voter here, rather than the "typical" R voter, aren't we? Maybe not

Also the founding fathers only cared about the basic human rights of white males and not all people, but still a very good post (the general point the the founders were all pretty progressive for their time is well taken). Thanks jfly

Well, the same question still stands--are the people really described in the article the reason Trump keeps winning all those primaries? We should not answer empirical questions by indulging our prejudices.

I'd toss Williamson in a U-Haul trailer without a mattress and run it off the side of the road. What I wish ground-down upstate New Yorkers to do is "leave" the kind of non-thinking that deludes them into imagining a drumpf has anything to offer them, ever. That isn't likely to happen.

Many exit polls have shown him winning all income levels.

I am seriously conflicted but I don't want a family full of Trumpites but whatever. Go Girl

I do like Trump somewhat. Not his ideas or general outlook on life but some of his platform.

My parents would usually listen to my advice. My dad loves Trump but I am sure it is just because he thinks he is funny.

When I vote I would have liked to have been able to have voted for Rubio.

Early exits have Trump +19 in Florida. Early votes seem to be confirming such things.
