You're a first year college student, and it's still September. What the hell college visit are you on?

Picture this: all of thrift fashion’s #1 fans, drinking imported lager served from a makeshift bar on the roof of some disused-turned-arty space. Sound like your vibe? Kick back and enjoy.

so i got an L-shaped desk so I can use a full-sized monitor & KB for my work laptop while still having my home PC accessible. KVM switch was just really slow and klugey and noisy to boot.

So the thing came with one keyboard tray. I'm debating the merits of adding a second under the perpendicular surface, knowing that I won't be able to extend both at the same time. Wonder if that too will prove klugey, as I'd have to push/pull (/PiP) every time I wanted to switch between the two....

Gig was canceled for tonight because there are a million things happening around town and the owner panicked. Ugh.

First, do you pronounce "klugey" like "kloojey"? I've always spelled the word "kludgey" and pronounced it with a short U but I heard somebody say it the other way for the first time and now I see that that seems to be the original pronunciation and spelling.

Second, have you considered using a USB 3.0 hub and A/B switch as a kind of ad-hoc KVM switch? You can run a monitor up to 1920x1200 off a USB-to-VGA adapter, and have your keyboard & mouse connected to the port. Then to switch computers you just have to push a button on the switch.

clue-gee

(the forgotten fourth brother of barry, robin, & maurice)

I haven't tried a USB switch, but I do have a real KVM switch. It's easy to get the switch to start, but it takes a couple seconds for the "receiving" PC to get everything set up and ready to go, and there are several bonks associated with losing and/or discovering the devices. I actually want to maintain two monitors (actually three, because I have one dedicated to those emergency dispatch pages that I sometimes quote), because I frequently will be keeping an eye on something from work while surfing BSG. It's just the keyboards that are causing a real estate issue- I hate having one (or both) on the desktop surface, and also is suboptimal for typing posture also. Especially at night- after I've powered the laptop off, it's dumb having the the kbd taking up space.

I've still got a bunch of tweaks to make in my new setup- my dispatch monitor doesn't fit under the hutch and is wasting valuable workspace, and I can't figure out where to put my TV. Right now I'm using the 24" "work" monitor hooked up to the tivo mini to watch the game, which should do in the short term, but the lack of a remote (for volume control/mute purposes) make it no good for a long-term solution.
