The whole hoopla over coffee is just that.

its really not that hard to brew a cup of coffee. either an aeropress(which takes 1 minute) or a chemex/pour over which its pretty simple but just requires more time.

buy beans
grind beans
add hot water
press or drip

doesn't get much more simpler than that.

plus i love posting this video of my pal

There's your issue.

If you drink coffee with beans ground fresh along with using high quality spring/filtered water (the single most important factor that most overlook) you'll likely feel differently.

Why does the water being filtered matter

Because coffee is essentially water that's being flavored: when you have excess minerals (like tap water) it impacts the taste significantly.

You ever notice how spring water or water that's been filtered tastes "cleaner" than from the tap? Same principle applies.

I think the difference to your coffee between filtered and unfiltered water is overstated, unless your tap water is pretty bad. I think most municipal water supplies in the US are good enough that the coffee flavor will overwhelm the difference in water flavor.

On the other hand, my in-laws have well water that tastes like ass, and their coffee tastes like ass too.

Where I'm at (Des Moines) my water is over 600 PPM, which is insanely hard. Once I stopped using tap water for my coffee, I noticed a huge improvement.

Actually, it got so expensive replacing filters (basically one a week at ~ $30 a pop) that I started buying discount spring water from the grocery store and stocking up there.

What the hell kind of filters were you using that cost $30 and had to be replaced weekly?

ZeroWater.

When you buy the original unit, they give you a meter that lets you read the PPM of your water: once it reads past 006 you're supposed to replace it. So because my tap water is awful, it would wear out the filter much quicker than usual.

For comparison's sake, when I tested the water coming from my old Brita it was over 100: that's not good.
