No worries. I just don't know the etiquette. Is a fifty page thread a fifty pager when it reaches fifty, or do you have to go one beyond fifty and reach 51 for it to be officially a 50 page? Or maybe you just have to wait for the 50th page to be filled? What if you start a new thread and then someone deletes a post in the old thread and it goes back to 49?

At any rate, the title is such a classic that it can always be used in the future.

Let's just fill this one up fast.

I think one the random thoughts thread gets to about 48 pages starting the next thread is fair game, if you've got a great thread title. If it's mediocre at best, wait til 49 at the earliest.

So I set up a 10' by 6' inflatable pool on my second story porch about a month ago. I took it down last night to let the wood on the porch dry out, but it's like 150 degrees up there. I'm taking a chance on collapsing my porch to beat the heat. I didn't pay a security deposit here, so I'm thinking if I collapse the porch without dying I'm just going to pack up my things and leave. Being a landlord must suck

They are calling it breast cancer even though she already doesn't have a breast there? She had it 7 years ago but I think they caught it early enough that she'll undergo chemo and hopefully be OK. She also lost an arm a few years back due to an infection that the hospital improperly diagnosed. I think it's really getting to the breaking point with her family over all this. One thing after another can really break your spirit.

Every foot of water in a 10'x6' pool weighs over 3500 pounds. This is beyond irresponsible. Even a deck built to code within the last few years, after codes were beefed significantly following a series of second story porch collapses, would not be designed to handle those loads. I can not stress this enough, do not do this.

That really sucks. Pretty amazing stuff they can do with chemo and other treatments these days, however awful they are to go through, hope everything works out.

I got away with it for like a month. Based on your comment, I won't put it up again. But damn, it felt good to have a pool.

Good to hear. This isn't a security deposit thing, it's a people might die thing.

Check my math, though. Max capacity of the thing is 264 gallons. I never filled it all the way. So I'm thinking I was around 2000 pounds. Figure I can have ten heavy people on that porch without any trouble. I don't believe I was doing anything terribly irresponsible. Irresponsible, yes, but I don't believe I put anyone in grave danger. Where does our math differ?

Edit: just to clarify, it's a kiddie pool. 10 by 6 is the width and length. It was never even a full foot deep. Couldn't even float in the thing.

There's about 7.5 gallons in one cubic foot of water. Each gallon of water weighs about 8.3 pounds.

10' x 6' = 60 square feet.

7.5 * 8.3 * 60 = 3735 pounds per foot of water in a 10x6 pool.

Probably the inflatable wall thickness. If they're a foot thick the interior square footage would be 8'x4', 32 sq. ft. 264 gallons is about 35 cubic feet, so filled about 13" deep. So you'd drop the weight under a ton but water still has a tendency to slosh which can give you a sizeable lateral load. Your weak point isn't the load the joists can hold, but the lateral load the connection to the ledger board can withstand. This is why all those second story porches collapsed. The code now calls for two lateral braces per porch which can withstand 1500 pounds of lateral load. Even at that volume of water you're maxing out what those braces are designed to withstand. And, since code now calls for the framing to be tied directly to the framing of the living area there's a high risk of a collapse causing damage to your floor framing in the home.
