that's some reading between the read-between lines right there. Elaborate?

Have to add that with respect to nuclear arms policy, I'm ancient enough to have been required to cower under my desk in 1st grade and to have faced the grim reality at that tender age that too many of our policymakers have sand for brains

According to Le Monde, Front Nationale and Marine Le Pen are under investigation for illegal campaign financing. It would be great for France if they were deported or executed.

Is the BNP openly racist? Le Pen the younger is a bit more savvy than her Father who basically campaigned on "Goddamnit I don't like the Negros" but the sentiment is basically the same.

I don't think the conservatives who are trying to recall Steve Sweeney understand how much this could help him with his core constituency.

Also, how insanely impossible it is to successfully recall in NJ.

Two unrelated presidential politics thoughts on this Friday

1) I think if Walker is the nominee, there's about a 97% chance Rubio is his VP pick (if Rubio does not run for reelection as seems to be the plan at the moment). Not a white guy, important state, speaks Spanish, can speak well about foreign policy.

2) I do not understand even a little bit why more ambitious Democrats aren't throwing their hats in the ring for the nomination. If you are a random liberal Democratic senator or governor who has presidential dreams, what better way to set yourself up as a person to watch for 2020/2024 than to run on Hillary's left, build a national progressive donor base, put in a decent debate performance or two, get clobbered in Iowa, and drop out to endorse her? Outside of O'Malley, the other Democratic challengers are has beens or never weres. Warren doesn't need to do this to raise her profile, and I get why she isn't running. But if you're Amy Klobuchar or someone young from a blueish state that doesn't have an election you need to win in 2016, what the hell is the downside?

I think under the daughter the FN is more like UKIP than the BNP on race/Europe stuff. BNP is pretty blatantly racist, where most of the UKIP/FN platform holds up without race coming into things though they certainly appeal to some racist folks. The FN and BNP are similar in that their economic stuff is protectionist/nationalizing things/populist/lefty, with UKIP mostly on the other side of the spectrum.

had intentionally not gone here, but given our current politics thread's title, it just seems odd that nobody's connected the jimmies and provided a link to Gawker's sordid insinuations about Arkansas' junior senator, which some claim is evidenced by his unusual dietary habits, and even by his uncharacteristically nuanced response to the Indiana bakery regulations crisis

Why does it matter if he's gay? He wouldn't be the first self loathing member of a minority group.

Also, he's a Straussian--apparently worked pretty closely with Harvey Mansfield at Harvard. And, while at Harvard, he wrote a number of oddly misogynistic columns for its newspaper. But actually, I think he's a bit too creepy to be actually gay. I just don't think he likes women much.

voting against a group you're a part of usually annoys many people of said group

Going to need to update my 'acceptable/unacceptable' chart if that Cotton article falls on the OK side of the line.
