Probably just me but I'm doubtful Dorn's signing up to roll tanks through the streets of Hong Kong

I wonder what the mode of censorship is in those cases. I mean if you'e one of the 150 in 10,000 whose posts are censored, is your post merely deleted? Do they post some kind of lame official "correction"? Do they contact you for mandatory 're-education'? Do they throttle your internet connection? Are you, along with your posts, disappeared?

At risk of stereotyping, shaming is big there, as I understand it. Maybe that factors in to the punishment.

FB is banned all the time in mainland China. But China residents and Chinese immigrants in America use "WeeChat" which is a pretty robust social network, focused on groups. Mrs TP is in a group with her med school classmates. They are immature at social media -- they post all the stupid shat and false rumors that we circulated by email 20 years ago. No one questions the veracity - they just repost. And these are med school grads. They also do a bit of airing of personal dramas.

Mrs TP keeps me apprised of hot topics there -- I will check and see what they are saying about Hong Kong.

Some of my Russian friends are just waiting for facebook to shut down. It seems so few Russians pay attention to politics beyond official news sources it really isn't necessary.

RICHMOND — Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s chief of staff left a voicemail for a Democrat who was on the verge of quitting the state Senate in June, saying that the lawmaker’s daughter might get a top state job if he stayed to support the governor’s uphill bid to expand Medicaid, according to descriptions from three people who heard the recording.

The senator, Democrat Phillip P. Puckett, wound up resigning the Senate, flipping control of the chamber to Republicans and thwarting McAuliffe’s signature goal of expanding health coverage under the Affordable Care Act.

Puckett’s abrupt exit came amid accusations that Republicans had enticed him to leave with job offers for himself and his daughter, triggering an ongoing federal investigation and inflaming partisan passions in Richmond.

Now a voicemail message suggests that Puckett fielded a similar overture from Paul Reagan, McAuliffe’s chief of staff.

The governor’s spokesman initially denied Thursday that Reagan had made any potential job offers, but he later acknowledged that the call had been made after he was read a transcript of Reagan’s voicemail given to The Washington Post.

McAuliffe found out taking a shortcut, wow, I'm really surprised by that. Someone should let him know it would be funnier if he were fat, drunk, drug-addled & bowling over women in the statehouse.

he probably couldn't find any VA Republicans willing to do one good thing even WITH a bribe stuffed in their pocket

There's this weird mixed up theme going around that the SS direcor was unqualified and couldn't do the job because she was a woman; no, she was bad at the job when put into it. She was certainly qualified. Plenty of women are and were qualified. Sheesh. Plus, the agency apparently has a big reporting problem where there is a culture of lack of accountability between its personnel.

At risk of stereotyping, shaming is big there, as I understand it. Maybe that factors in to the punishment.

I just find it incredible that with today's access to information in general that such a large educated population will simply put up with not having a true say in their own short lives on this planet.

Many of the young Russians I spoke with were under no illusions about how their country is run, but they believe, quite rationally, that their best option is to try to do the best they can for themselves. These students speak English, and could access news from Britain and the US. But they don't for the most part. Encouraging indifference is easier and more effective than censorship. From what I've seen, the Chinese are more demanding of their government than the Russians.

Russians just want to smoke Marlboros, drink vodka and listen to the Beatles.

According to the Russian students here, we only have one russian student who likes Putin. Everyone else thinks he's a lunatic. Kids usually follow their parents' lead, so I'm guessing he's not well liked among the russian wealthy, maybe because they're having their wealth frozen in foreign accounts. Or maybe they have some sense. Or maybe I'm putting too much stock in what a bunch of teenagers say.

Putin has also done a good job of finding scapegoats (the GAYS!) to keep people not thinking about the things they really should be thinking about.

While official Chinese media is censoring reports out of Hong Kong, Chinese people and Chinese Americans are having full-on debates about it in WeChat. Yes, all the WeChat servers are in mainland China, and they are blocking some users who have Hong Kong phone numbers, but they do not seem to be blocking all the spinoff discussions - with pictures - on WeChat.

Opinion is split - some see Hong Kong as a troubled teen needing tough love -- others see Tianamnen Square all over. Mrs. TP believes in the mainland POV -- that Hong Kong is not ready to govern itself and needs the commie oversight.

I don't quite agree with her either - but the point is to show that the Chinese who lived under commie rule may view the lawn''n'order stuff more highly than they value the right to express yourself.

In 68, they woulda voted for Nixon.
