Any practical or non-practical tips or recommendations? I know nothing of the area/geography/travel times but according to Google maps i'm not THAT far from all kinds of shit I've heard of but never seen. Or should I just spend the night in the mall across from my hotel?

do you have a car? If so, I'd venture over to Malibu.

No but I have Uber and a credit card. I was thinking Santa Monica pier?

that would be very nice and more reasonable with Uber.

so it's boring, but here's how it went down. My post about killing it happened right before i went back up and saw it alive again.

so i wake up at 4:10 and hear rustling under the bed. i think it's my cat being annoying again. wbut when i wake up, that's it my brain doesn't shut off and i'm up. since i am up, i decide to go downstairs and drink coffee and look at porn. i come down and the cat is on the couch so i'm like "oh".

i sit down, thinking i may have dreamt it, and i hear my wife get up to go to the bathroom. i go back up as she is laying back down, probably doesn't see me bc she's blind. i lay down again, thinking i should try and get to sleep. about 5 minutes later i hear something on the night table.
I turn on the light, and the bat swoops by my head. i go "Lisa, a bat", she yells

i grab a pillow and get up and on its second swoop hit it. it's not moving, but i grab a trash can and cover it and we go downstairs
so we're sitting there collecting our thoughts, and lisa has to go to the bathroom again. she goes up and says "paul, it's moving"

so damn it i go back up and there it is moving inside the trash can. if we didn't have a clear trash can i probably would have just lifted it earlier, thinking it was dead. i come up with a plan to open our window, get something flat, and try and fit it under the trash can. lisa grabs an album
the band was bread.

i didn't want to have to carry it far so i kept pushing the trash can on the ground closer to the window. each time i move it, it squeaks. i tell lisa to follow the trail with a bleach housecleaning spray

i get near the window, slide the record underneath the trash can, and throw the whole combination of trash can, Bread, and bat, from the second floor onto the sidewalk. it's laying there stunned, then it gets up and flies away
then i went out and threw out my pillow, the trash can, and the album
luckily it was trash night and our cans were out already

sorry if boring/too long

So, I'd posted a few weeks ago about my grandfather, he passed away yesterday. He was 85 years old, a navy meteorologist and served 3 tours of active duty during wartime on an aircraft carrier. He retired when I was a kid and returned to civilian service at NAFEC in Galloway, NJ as a weather guesser, as he called it. He was the funniest and most optimistic person I've met. After having surgery to remove a brain tumor, which is what landed him in the hospital to begin with, he contracted a blood infection, which was his ultimate undoing. It was so severe that anyone going in his room had to wear a gown, gloves and mask, the other day a nurse came in to put a new IV in and said "Mr. Gardner, I'm going to hold your hand while I do this." And he replied a beat later, "That's fine, just don't try to kiss me, Ok."

Sounds like a great dude. Sorry for your loss. The worst is behind you both.
