Our company had a black tie optional holiday party a few years ago and I wore a black suit with black tie and that's what everyone else wore. No tuxes

having been to a ton of weddings the past couple years, its amazing how many dudes have cheap, poor-fitting suits. like big ass coats with shoulder pads and stuff. get a tailored suit and learn a windsor knot and you'll look like you have your shit together.

Yeah I interpret black tie optional to be "some of our family members might wear Hawaiian shirts and Oakley Blades if we don't state otherwise." A nice dark suit is totally acceptable.
