I connected speakers to my FIOS cable box, which is connected to my HDTV. Works and sounds good, but I can only adjust volume manually on the speaker unit, not with my TV or FIOS remote. Even though the TV volume is set to variable.
Is that normal? Do I need a receiver or something to adjust the volume with a remote?

Like you should have the FiOS box connected to an HDMI input on the receiver, and the HDMI output on the receiver connected to an HDMI input on the TV. You can set the receiver to send video only to the TV and then the audio gets sent to the speakers with regular speaker wire. Then you just need a universal remote that controls the FiOS box, the receiver, and the TV. Onkyo makes decent, reasonably priced receivers.
