their handler has to tell them to search, although I'm sure they temporarily react to trained smells otherwise. And they will stop attacking if their handler gives the command. (pro tip: the dogs and handlers are trained to a foreign language from where they are deployed). The PD chief showed me a video last week where they have trained the dog to open the rear door of the police car (from the outside). Pretty cool.

mostly they just sit and stare to alert the handler. the majority of time my brother just gets the dog out and people start talking before he can even do anything. they're often trained in protection as well.

sorry, i re-read my paragraph and it doesn't refute the concept that they 'go after' people like I wanted to- in fact it does just the opposite. My first and second sentences are unrelated. Of course RP is correct- dogs don't "attack" unless they are ordered by the handler. Like when RP reaches for the last drumstick at thanksgiving- that there's the basis for an attack order.

usually freak people out by yelling "attack" when they come over for the first time.
