Probably won't ever buy a laptop again.

i'll probably end up buying a gaming desktop down the road. but i don't own a desk or chair or anything either. so i don't feel like investing in all of that to use a desktop. so a laptop fits my needs for the moment.

Since building my new desktop, I hate hate HATE using my laptop 99% of the time, but having the portability has its advantages.

I'll probably get something netbookish down the road a bit, like this.

Not to speak for WFO, but they're expensive relative to desktops for a given level of performance (and aren't as fast as desktops at the high end), they have relatively small and low-resolution screens (or else they're enormous and thus have only limited portability), and their keyboards and "mice" are generally poor compared to decent desktop options. Basically, for someone who does a lot of work on a computer (especially certain kinds of work that demand processing power and/or a lot of pixels), they're limiting and slow and generally annoying.

So my personal plan is to eventually replace my laptop, which previously was my only computer, with an even more compact laptop to be used only when portability is needed, and do the rest of my work on my desktop.

and that particular lappy is really esspensive.

I own a desktop and have a work laptop. My next move will be to get a convertible tablet/laptop. I want the convenience of a tablet with the option of a keyboard when necessary.

Pretty much this. I bought my laptop to take to Iraq with me. Now I keep it on my nightstand and use it to play music when I go to sleep and for the gamethreads while watching the games. I also don't think there's any real need for a "gaming" computer in today's market either, graphics have definitely started to plateau and I'm not seeing much of the value outside of choosing a motherboard with a newer processor architecture (45nm Core i5/i7/i9). Personally, I'm a big advocate of the home theater PC as the center of a home network. If you need to take your computer with you while going to school or traveling on business then sure, they're still the best portable computers. But if its to use the internet from the kitchen table then a cheap netbook/laptop/tablet to hook into your home network will probably make you happier in the long run.

I'm so glad we're back.

I was starting to feel like Will Ferrell on SNL when they did that morning news show sketch where the teleprompter stopped working and they all went insane.

this is what i'm struggling with now. How powerful of a laptop do i really need if i can't do 'new game' gaming on it? i also don't want to phase myself out in a year or so with a lower end laptop, to.

may end up waiting a few months till the second gen ultrabooks come out. the first gen ones will drop dramatically and i can probably get a good deal.

Anyone ever contest a traffic citation in the city? I would win, but I'm leaning toward paying the $100 if I'd be subjected hours of hell

Anyone here ever been to Australia?

Wife and I are going at the end of the month. Right now planning on about 6 days in Sydney and then 2-3 in Cairns for some beach and Great Barrier Reef stuff. Best of all is her company is paying for a large chunk of it so we couldn't really pass up the opportunity.
you sure do seem to have a lot of time on your hands to be on this forum? Do you have a job? Are you a shut-in?

Yup. Just posted about this on Monday. Took good pictures (and was right), so I won. Totally worth it. Bring a book.

I went to Philly traffic court a lot of years ago. My wait wasn't long, but the outcome horrific. The judge (who was the president judge at the time) DIDN'T KNOW TRAFFIC LAWS. I got pinged for an expired emissions sticker, but my car was registered in Lancaster and didn't require emissions (not sure if this is still the case). I figured I'd show the judge my registration and we'd have a good chuckle as he erased the fine. But instead, he asks his bailiff, "I think all cars in the state need emissions, don't they?" She says "I think so". GUILTY.

Had I been prepared with the statute number and printed off the relevant pages in the book (had to look it up in a library, that's how long ago it was) I could've gotten off, but I put too much faith in a judge ACTUALLY KNOWING THE LAW so I was unprepared.
