You know, I honestly thought once upon a time that Mike Huckabee was a fundamentally decent person. This is legitimately breaking my heart.

SC GOP turnout up 35% over 2008 at least

He simply can't seal the deal: the more people see of him, the less they like him. His Mormonism still hurts him among the base, and he's just the perfectly wrong challenger candidate for this year.

Their nominee might not be someone currently in the race. (And Daniels, Huckabee, maybe Palin et al have to be kicking themselves for not jumping in.)

Wonder if they get to the convention and try to draft Jeb Bush. There's no way they can run Gingrich.

I am starting to wonder if a protracted nomination process actually helps the eventual Republican nominee. I think Obama was helped, to some degree, by the protracted nomination process in 2008. SC's turnout was way up over Iowa; the longer this goes on, the more excited and interested Republicans get in the outcome. That means more turnout, and perhaps more carry over to the general election. If Romney were stomping his way to victory, people would be bored and not showing up. Also, the longer this goes on, the longer Republicans get almost exclusive coverage from the media.

Of course, it would help the GOP if their choices were better than Romney, Gingrich, and Santorum.

Maybe my boss is right and we are headed for a brokered convention. Christie could be the nominee yet!

Heard two funny lines from Newt supporters on the news. One said his personal life shouldn't matter at all. Another said he wasn't happy with any of the candidates including Newt but he had to pick someone.

looking at a breakdown of Newt's votes, evangelical Christendom has quite different occupants in SC than in IA or NH
Yes, but in a double utley you can put your utley on top they other guy's utley, and you're the winner. (Swish)

On one hand, I like the Newt surge because he would be a much easier opponent for Obama in the fall. On the other hand, winning the nomination would make Newt just one step away from the presidency and he's a neocon with a brain and a crazy streak.

on the other other hand, a significant share of the US population would have to ratify Newt's taking that step and that is inconceivable

I would have thought it was inconceivable for him to be the nominee. I can't imagine him winning, but sometimes crazy shit happens. An economic crash of sort kind might unleash the crazy.

I guess I don't understand why the establishment thought it would different this time for Romney. Just couldn't quite overcome the McCain charm offensive?
