So I've been doing some research on my car issues and it seems the estimate the shop i went to would be a bit higher than most places. They want to charge me almost 900 for labor on a job that a lot of places on the internet say takes 3-4 hours at most. Is it weird to call around to other shops in the area to ask if they'll do it cheaper without having to diagnose it themselves?

Being an adult really sucks sometimes.

sticky situation because you can't really expect a shop to do what you're asking. if you want to pull the car out of the shop then tell them that you can't afford the fix at the moment and you'll have to come back at another time when the you CAN afford the price.

but i really think your motor is shot and you should get a new car.

mechanics usually won't go that high on a possible rip off. they might inflate labor at some point here and there but 900$ is a lot of money. i think they're not giving you the full story of exactly what broke or people on the internet don't have exactly the same 'amount' of problems that yours just had

good point, they did say this would take 2 days. i don't know anything about cars, but this doesn't seem like the kind of thing that would justify a new car.

what is wrong with it again? I know repair prices have a lot of regional bias. I always expect to spend more than what I read on the interwebs even with the low bid. thankfully I found a decent mechanic and don't go near the stealerships anymore.

Need a new intake manifold gasket and then they have to change the oil filter. Basically, coolant is leaking into my oil.

I took it to a mechanic that had mostly good reviews online and is approved by AAA. Apparently, it's a local chain here is Seattle(They have 5 or 6 shops). Definitely expected to pay more than what people say on the internet. But pretty much every place I've looked says it's a 3-5 hour job, so labor should be like 250-400 and not 850-900 like they estimated. The price for the parts is spot on with what I could get at an auto shop, though.

SK, are you looking up those prices in relation to YOUR car? intake manifold in one car can be easy to replace while in another a pain in the butt.

whenever i hear coolant and oil mixing i just fear the worst. after a while your oil pump will fail and your water pump will fail. then hoses/gaskets will start to fail.

i would get it fixed ASAP though to avoid all of those problems. only takes a couple hundred of miles of oil mixing to really ruin every other part in the engine.

I'm getting it done in a week. From now until then, my car is only going to and from work and for errands.
