I've thought about that a lot, as I lay under my car with hot oil dripping down my arm and all over the frame crossmember, which then must be cleaned off. All in all, these things are pretty well designed- almost on a par with a Beetle. My conclusion was that there were probably too many other trade-offs they'd need to make in order to make the oil filter more accessible. Oddly (for me) I sort of trust that they did the right thing.

There's a lot more stuff they cram into an engine compartment these days, and those compartments have also shrunk a bit. But if you want easier access to your oil filter, can I interest you in this 1977 Buick?

On the drive down here drove through an intense monsoon that was approximately 30 seconds long. Nothing more than drizzle the rest of the way.

My car themometer took an outside temp reading of 108 degrees on the way from New Brunswick back to South Philly today (around 4 o'clock).

Economics 101. The car manufacturers do that on purpose so the service departments at their dealerships get more work.
