I've always wondered about Whole Foods--the produce always looked suspiciously pretty to me. Quite unlike what you'd find at a farmer's market.

Mackey's self-indulgent op-ed probably won't torch his business. It does highlight that his 'innovation' was basically to fashion a profitable aura around natural chow for that startlingly large slice of the population who live to eat, rather than eat to live.

What I was getting at is the produce doesn't really look natural at all.

Because people associate "purity" with aesthetic beauty. Even the "farmer's markets" around me are literally repackaged supermarket produce marked up and sold in cute little green cardboard quarts. If you tried to sell them real farm fresh produce they'd balk at how it's ugly and dirty.

Well, what we've seen in the case of health/pharma is, when it's treated as / viewed as a consumer good, that's what you get. You get boner pillz and other repeat sale "consumer products" geared towards a wide audience because that's more profitable. Innovation / research / efforts go to developing mass consumer products (whether needed or not). "Improvements" are typically minute meaningless formula manupulations so a new patent can be filed (and thus exclude generics). You don't get the "cure for cancer/AIDS/nasal warts" because the market for that is too small.

America needs more of this! Barney Frank just became my favorite member of the House of Representatives.

Barney had himself a beautiful teachable moment there.

My feeling is he started strong with the 1st amendment reference, but blew it by sinking to that poor deluded girl's level.

Yes, because he's the first President that's ever been mindlessly compared to Hitler.

But I thought LaRouche was an anti-Semite/Nazi sympathizer, so would she have been giving a back-handed compliment of sorts?

I have no problem believing she's a Larouchite.

True fact--Lyndon LaRouche was a Quaker.

I spent a portion of last night explaining to my dad why the Birther movement is full of crazies. That was fun. I capped it off by showing a daily show clip.

I wanted to sell t-shirts last summer that had the (photoshopped/fake) picture of her in the flag two-piece bikini holding an AK-47 with the legend

DRILL

BABY

DRILL

in big red letters over it.

Unfortunately, my uncle who's in that business is a fairly staunch Republican, and was much less enthusiastic about the idea.
