Why is it cynical to acknowledge that the first purpose of almost any organization that lasts beyond 12 months of inception is self-perpetuation, ahead of whatever explicit purpose it had at the outset - and that the 'best' executives for accomplishing that are those inclined to achieve little else?
It's like being upset that "makes outs less often than peers" may be a better metric for baseball success than "plays the game the right way".
