High speed rail? I don't think 8 billion gets this built, and I don't see any credible news source linked, but whatever.

I don't check the Drudge site, but based on PoliticalWire he must be running out of sirens:

--> Big earmark scandal brewing around John Murtha

--> Burris on the brink?

--> Sebelius next HHS nominee

--> Obama: no disinterment of "Fairness Doctrine"

Seeing Murtha and Burris both go down should be something that brings all of us together in, if not joy, at least satisfaction.

As for Sebelius, I'm starting to think Obama maybe doesn't want the Democrats to get to 60 seats in the Senate--first he takes Napolitano out of play, now the only Dem who could have won that race. As I'm not entirely keen on seeing them get to 60 either, I'm fine with this, especially if the cabinet choices prove effective, but it's certainly unusual.

And I'm glad he's not giving in to the more rabid elements on the left with the outdated and unnecessary "Fairness Doctrine." It might or might not have had a point 50 years ago, in a very different media age; not now.

President Shimon Peres is expected to complete his consultations with party representatives on Thursday night, and come to a decision on whether to charge Foreign Minister and Kadima chair Tzipi Livni or Likud leader Binyamin Netanyahu with the task of forming the next government.

According to sources at Beit Hanassi [President's Residence], Peres will invite Livni and Netanyahu to meet with him in person on Friday.

On Thursday morning, after a week of keeping his cards very close to his chest, Israel Beiteinu chairman Avigdor Lieberman on Thursday arrived at the President's Residence and revealed that his party would endorse Netanyahu for prime minister. Lieberman, however, conditioned his recommendation on the formation of a broad government that would include Kadima, but said that he was opposed to a rotation at the helm of the government.

It's still unclear which route Netanyahu intends to take when forming a coalition, or I guess if Peres will even follow Lieberman's recommendation

"Though this nation has proudly thought of itself as an ethnic melting pot, in things racial we have always been and I believe continue to be, in too many ways, essentially a nation of cowards," Holder said.

Race issues continue to be a topic of political discussion, but "we, as average Americans, simply do not talk enough with each other about race."

I'll say it. This is a dumb generalization for a number of reasons.

1) Average Americans don't talk about a lot of important things. The average person may talk about sports, celebrities, and TV shows. They don't talk about the travesty of Jim Crow laws, or the long term consequences of Affirmative Action.
2) What exactly does he want people to talk about?
"Hey, did you realize that Donovan McNabb is black?"
"Did you also know that he hates answering stupid questions about race?"
"Errr, do you think they'll win this week?"
3) Does he want us to talk more about gender, or immigration, or the proper place life insurance may or may not hold in a person's estate planning? Well, tough shit. People just want to talk about what beer they're drinking, who's fucking who, and this dang economy.
4) In my opinion, too many people in this world spend ALLtheir time talking about race. Every issue is a race issue, and every person is a possible racist. This is a skewed outlook that sets back race relations.

I was lucky enough to sit right next to the G'town student section during the beatdown from Davidson last year in the tourney. I'm pretty sure that the Hoyas fans are the scum of the earth. No offense. If there is such a thing as karma, that game proved it.

See, I read it in a different way. I saw it as an attack on political correctness-that out of fear of saying the wrong thing, people say nothing. And further, without people actually talking, there is no way that social relations can move forward. Going even further, how many white people said anything about Bill Cosby's provocative statements a year or so ago? It also seems to be to imply that people have to be less sensitive about language--consider the intent rather than the words.

Finally, I think that what Holder may be saying is that while people may wish that by not talking about race and racism it will go away, that's not happening.

Racism is not going away? <cough> Obama is President<cough>

Your point about political correctness is a good one. People would rather avoid a topic (politics, religion, race) than possibly offend someone. I rarely worry about being PC (my office talks about this stuff freely at lunches), but I definitely was raised that certain topics are not proper to talk about in polite company.

Racism is dying off slowly, as old people die off. The proportion of racists decreases with each generation, IMO.

4 accused of helping to assasinate Anna Politkovskaya found not guilty. Not entirely surprising. Still very depressing.

During the investigation vital pieces of evidence disappeared, including mobile phone SIM cards, computer discs and a photo of Rustam Makhmudov, who apparently fled to western Europe using a false passport. Crucial video footage showing the assassin entering Politkovskaya's apartment block went missing.

Would it be a cheap shot to note that Ms. Politkovskaya's "natural rights" were violated, evidently without consequence?

Man, I can't even joke about this one. I met her once, and even though she knew she was running risk of being killed, she was really calm and good natured.

No, I'm with you. It's truly horrifying, and by all accounts she was a real hero.

Unfortunately, the only American journalists who ever seem interested in this are Christopher Hitchens and Matt Taibbi.

It notes at the end that Novaya Gazeta has carried out its own investigation so I'm kind of hoping they publish something. I've still to read her book on Putin's Russia.

I can't imagine we're much better or worse than the average student section. I also doubt the Cuse fans are all that much worse than average. I just don't like them, and they got caught doing something dumb on camera.
