Al Franken Century / Super Inaug-u-rama Politics Thread

The hookers aren't alone in the inauguration cash-in: cocaine dealers expect to make big bucks as well, New York Magazine reports.

One coke dealer the magazine spoke with said he expects a payday in the high five figures. (Guess those late night inaugural partiers really need to stay awake!)

"I've had people calling me about this for weeks," a dealer told New York Magazine. "I just sold out. I gotta re-up."

So while parts of high-society are drinking champagne and making small talk, other parts will be doing lines and hitting up hookers. Well, that's certainly what the hookers and coke dealers interviewed hope!

What I think I'm most impressed with about Obama is that since the election, he seems to have won over or at least neutralized a lot of former doubters on the right, without alienating many of those on the left who adored him. I saw something yesterday that his approval rating in Oklahoma is up to 53 percent right now, in a state he lost by, what, 30 points? Granted that some of this is the honeymoon effect that every president enjoys, but the guy is also just really deft.

Some of it is Obama, some of it is what I think psychologists call wishful projection.

I'm surprised he made it through the speech without requesting a knit cap or something to warm those ears. It's too freakin' cold out to stand up straight bare-headed and be articulate. How does he do it?

Borderline epic fail.

Got there shortly after nine, right by the gate we were supposed to use to get in. Capitol police told us to get in another line, which ended up screwing us up. Gates were supposed to open at 9, but apparently people had snuck into our section on the lawn, so the police had to clear them out. By the time they opened the gates at 10, it was pretty clear a whole lot of people weren't going to get in. I got close, actually was probably about 100 yards from where the cannons did the 21 gun salute.

The people around me were just epically pissed. I was alright with it. It was neat to be down there, even though we couldn't really see much. I was afraid people were going to riot or something. Some really awful things were said to the Capitol Police. I could not get out of that crowd fast enough. I mean, you can understand why they were irate. People came from far and wide, and many paid a lot of money for those tickets. But I wasn't about to get trampled.

I managed to get Chipotle on the way home, so all was not lost.

if you don't know what the wrestlers are trying to do--how certain moves and holds are supposed to work and so forth, then it might just look like too sweaty guys rolling around on a mat.

Oh. I'm replying to a Steagles post. Um. OK.

Having just read the speech, I must say it is quite good. It starts off slow, and contains a bunch of generalities, obviously, but I still liked it.

Angry People

It probably shouldn't come as a surprise that Metro Police and Capitol Police and the Secret Service would manage to fuck the whole situation up so majorly.

Bizarre scene with Dodd, Hatch and Kerry following Kennedy strapped on a gurney getting hoisted into an ambulance.

According to Sen. Hatch, Kennedy remained conscious, but said thinks he suffered a seizure and was in pain.

Weird turn. Random.

I'm sure Jerseyhoya knows this, but Hatch and Kennedy, as unlikely as it sounds, are good friends. Hatch even wrote a song for Kennedy.

It's like a movie, the Senator who used to be in the Klan falling ill upon a black man becoming President.

*I realize he's apologized for his membership and I think he's been quite genuine in his renunciation of his past. Just putting this in here, so that discussion doesn't start.

It's a bit too glib to call this"obstruction we can believe in," but Cornyn is on the money, so to speak, here.
