Lots of interesting points in here.

I do disagree with his inferred premise that there is no advantage to tanking in MLB (he says due to the rarity of consensus #1 picks and the length/volatility of prospect development). The new(ish) bonus pool system absolutely rewards tanking. The slot value of #1 versus #5 in 2015 carried a difference of $4.5M. In the second round, it was $150K. In the third round, it was $50K. That adds up after a while.

And that's just #1 versus #5. Being #9/10 like the Phils were last year is damn near no-man's land.

I'm not exactly saying something groundbreaking here either. This has been discussed on here numerous times. There is no value to being mediocre and putting up a 70-75 win season. As long as you're not hamstringing your franchise going forward, I have no problem with being the worst team in the majors, as painful as it is.

I don't think his point is that the Phillies should try to be mediocre, just that they should try to be better than 10 games worse than the 2nd worse team in baseball. being spectacularly bad in the NBA or NFL will lead to taking a guy with your first round pick who was a college star and fan base and existing players can rally around that. In MLB because a first round pick is so far away being atrocious casts a pall over the fan base and other players. Fans don't want to come to games which leads to lower revenues and players don't want to sign with you because your hopeless.

I guess I'm missing where the 2015 rotation was assembled differently than the 2014 rotation. Were they too optimistic about Lee? Sure. But oh well.

2014: Hamels-Lee-Burnett-Kendrick-Hernandez/Buchanan
2015: Hamels-Lee-Harang-Williams-Buchanan/Billingsley/random

It's the same thing. The only differences are (1) Lee made 13 appearances in 2014, and (2) we already knew Kendrick, and he's generally a reliable sort of crappy instead of a lottery ticket type of crappy.

It's hard to get worked up over that. Bad is bad. They got a bit luckier in 2014, but then again Burnett was bad and injured, much like Harang. Is Roberto Hernandez really thatmuch better than Jerome Wililams? Both have career ERA+ of 89.

Sixers Summer League games are getting more pages than July Phillies games. A Sixers team that won 18 games last year. These are sad times, pals.

Hernandez had decent computer numbers which made him attractive to smart teams. He stinks too but computers blame it on BABIP luck or something.
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

Ken Rosenthal
Good news on Utley: Per source, he not only is feeling better, but also has figured out a flaw in his swing that was caused by ankle injury.

I just don't understand the Chase thing. I don't understand what HE is thinking? Is he not accepting that he's not the player he was? Does he think he can still play and be a better than average ballplayer? If so, wouldn't he want to be a DH/1B to help his wheels - and go to an AL team, and get a shot at playoffs?

I will always appreciate his career in Phila., despite the deterioration the last couple years - and the injury woes - but he cannot be allowed to get those plate appearances. It has to end this year.

well, until Hamels got massacred - he was top 10 NL pitcher. Not sure the perception now. He's 9th in IPs, 5th in strikouts, around 15th in ERA, his WHIP jumped way up to 1.22

So - would it be fair trade, to get 1 player a super blue chip prospect. He's an expensive 30-something pitcher.

can we get just 1 blue chip guy, and live with that? Or does it have to be a 3 player for 1 and hope to hit on one of 3? But none of them being a real blue chip?

one start doesn't change his trade value.

He's an elite LHP and the return needs to match his proven major league track record.

Schwarber got called back up to catch. Hamels is lined up at Chicago July 25th. Can't we just get them to switch teams?
