I do disagree with his inferred premise that there is no advantage to tanking in MLB (he says due to the rarity of consensus #1 picks and the length/volatility of prospect development). The new(ish) bonus pool system absolutely rewards tanking. The slot value of #1 versus #5 in 2015 carried a difference of $4.5M. In the second round, it was $150K. In the third round, it was $50K. That adds up after a while.
And that's just #1 versus #5. Being #9/10 like the Phils were last year is damn near no-man's land.
I'm not exactly saying something groundbreaking here either. This has been discussed on here numerous times. There is no value to being mediocre and putting up a 70-75 win season. As long as you're not hamstringing your franchise going forward, I have no problem with being the worst team in the majors, as painful as it is.
