2015 Draft: Phillies picks, bios, signings, etc.

Interesting comment from Zolecki in last night's article

The Phillies have signed or reached agreements with 28 of the 29 players they hoped to sign immediately following the Draft. (The others are draft-and-follow selections, which must be signed by July 17.) The only holdout is UNLV senior right-hander Joseph Lauria, who was a 25th-round pick.

So it sounds like they are "done" for now. They have agreements with everybody Rounds 1-24, Round 26-28 and of course Round 35 (Amaro). Round 25 (Lauria) said no thanks. That leaves 11 other guys not signed which include the three nepotism guys (Morandini, McCarthy and Brundage) who they never even really considered signing and then the following 8 guys that maybe they try to sign by July 17th (Stevens (HS) , Watson (HS), Grady (HS), Pelletier(HS), Gonzalez (Juco), Fanti (HS), Wilson (College Junior), Nowlin (College Junior)). At least those are my guesses.

Tobias and Laird can't sign until they are eliminated in the CWS
Williams can't sign until his HS class graduates on Friday
I don't know what the hold up is on Falter and Gilbert.

did not realize they were THAT far along. Good going. Honestly, this was a quality draft all-around.

Better if they get one or two of the HS fliers. It looks like they have about 1/2 million to spend on them if they go to the 105% limit. If they get one flier I hope it's Stevens, although Pellatier intrigues me, too.

Would rather of spent that extra money on a better 3rd rounder (BA #34 Dakota Chalmers, HS, RHP got 500k over slot later that round) . But definitely happy they at least had a plan. Really like Randolph. Kingery, Martin and Pickett picks plus statistically impressive college Juniors after 10th.

BTW, watched CSN video of Randolph after signing yesterday. No way he's 6'1". Cole looked like a small forward next to him and even Sandberg had a couple inches on him. I know they were in cleats but he can't be taller than 5'10".

I agree with all of this but especially the part about going with a more highly rated guy in the 3rd round.

so with 25 or more guys signing every year - and only so many rosters - I guess they cut that many guys from the low minors every season. What is the average attrition rate for the late round guys? 1-2 years before they are cut for the newest draft class?

Based on my experiences attending Arizona League games (with a dozen other people) and even NY-Penn League games, I'd bet half to 2/3's of the players are out of affiliated baseball within 2 seasons.

Edit: And I'm talking about the rosters of teams in those leagues in general, so it'd probably even be higher for late round picks.

That 25 number doesn't even include the backlog of players in instructional league and those in the VSL/DSL prep areas.

If you look at the GCL and Williamsport rosters from 2012, I bet half of them are out of baseball.
