Pilot opposition out of concern the airlines would micromanage their asses. IMO, a mutually agreeable solution would be black box c0ckpit video that gets erased after safe landing... you'd have video in case of catastrophe and the honchos won't be able to yell at pilots for taking a pee break.

There's over 100,000 commercial airline flights on any given day. Satellite coverage areas at 30,000 feet for such a thing are very small, and are totally non-existent over the oceans (it isn't the same as the ACARS system... wider satellite coverage that only handles twice-an-hour pings and small data streams).

It's chilling reading about the screaming of the passengers and the pilot banging on the door. We pretty much take it for granted that every time we get on a plane we’re just completely trusting these total strangers with our lives, and if they want to just take down an entire plane there’s really fuck all anyone can do about it.

well, we just trust that people don't want to do bad. imagine walking on the side of the road and someone swerving to hit you, or someone opening fire while you're in line at the grocery store. life can be scary

I’m not saying we need to get freaked out about it or anything, I’ve just always thought it was a bit of a sobering thought that we put our lives in these people’s hands everyday and don’t really think anything of it.
