2014 Draft: Phillies picks, bios, signings, etc.

I'm speaking of the organization as a whole, but even without the trades, it's still horrible.

Right now the Phillies remind me so much of the White Sox of the last few years. Aging core, no minor league system, long-time doofus GM that had some success and (unlike Rube) managed to win a WS. One really good SP in his prime. Toolshed draft strategy that doesn't work. And most importantly, no plan.

Last year, the White Sox hired Rick Hahn and he's done a great job of starting the turnaround of the org. Signing Abreu, trading an overrated closer for Adam Eaton, acquiring Avisail Garcia, maybe acquiring their future 3B (Matt Davidson). They have a way to go, but they are building a core. That needs to happen now here. These fuckheads dont have a plan.
I know what you're asking yourself and the answer is yes. I have a nick name for my penis. Its called the Octagon, but I also nick named my testes - my left one is James Westfall and my right one is Doctor Kenneth Noisewater.

Hey guys, remember when we drafted a powerhitting corner OF who can't field his position who posted a sub-.600 OPS over 500+ PAs in the Sally League? Good times!

:dh:

609 OPS, don't short it

That was last season. You're ignoring his stellar .478 OPS over 54 AB this season before getting hurt.

Two years later and we're still joking about this kid:

You might remember Cozens. He was the kid who transferred to Scottsdale Chaparral after being kicked off the Scottsdale Desert Mountain baseball team for disciplinary reasons.

Cozens actually got in a fight with a coach and teammates which got him kicked off the team. A kid got off a bucket during a game, called spits, and then Cozens took the seat, but when the kid returned, he kindly asked Cozens for the seat back. Cozens got extremely upset and went after the kid who called spits but a coach interfered and Cozens punched the coach.

Yep. A third of that Nats total is tied up in Strasburg, Harper, Storen, Rendon and Giolito

Yeah, I was gonna say the same thing, Washington's number is skewed from the Harper/Strasburg picks and Pit and Kc have what, one playoff appearance between them in that span? I mean, it's inexcusable for the phillies to be at the bottom, but spending a lot isn't some guarantee of success either.

Boston and Tampa are the only teams on that list spending over $6m/yr who have been any good

At least the slotting system rendered this irrelevant.

There's no straight line correlation between that spending and the success of farm systems, e.g. the Braves (and Cleveland/San Diego haven't exactly cranked out a line of young stars). But when you're something like a third below the average, that's a bad sign. And if you added in international spending pre the MAG fiasco, it'd be no better.

They do everything badly.

Did we even spend our whole international allotment last year?

What I wouldn't give to have the baseball equivalent of the Sixers owners and Sam Hinke for the Phillies.

And we gave up a first rounders for Jon Lieber, Raulll, Cliff and Pap (when we wouldn't have had to surrender if Rube waited a little longer).
