The great bit is the indictment is for his *threat* to veto the funding unless she resigned. It wasn't a crime for him to actually veto the funding because the governor has wide discretion with his veto power, but according to the hacks gunning for Perry it was a crime to issue the threat to veto. Gotta hand it to the Travis County DA's office though with them finding a new, even dumber way to criminalize the practice of politics.

Edit: One of the charges might be from the veto itself, while the other definitely is not. But Perry's attorney said the facts of the case conceded that he was allowed to exercise his power to veto legislation under the constitution of Texas. I'm a bit confused, but to be fair, so is the Austin DA.

Sounds from TWITTER that a handful of protesters are looting some stores and other protesters are trying to stop them and the police aren't getting directly involved because I guess they think they'd look like assholes or make things worse.

There seemed to bit of a back and forth earlier with bottles and whatnot going one way and tear gas going the other when the cops were trying to get people to move along, but this development has seemed to be some protesters trying to be dicks and others trying to be heroes while the cops are not doing anything. Per TWITTER, as I am not in St. Louis County, Missouri.

Yeah, i, mean, that's how we're all following it, obviously. seems like there are different things going on in the different parts of town. The videos Amy K Nelson has been posting make the cops look pretty bad.

I'd guess the cops are thinking they'd make things worse if they tried to directly intervene so they're hoping if they hang back the self policing will snuff out the trouble. It'd be good if that turns out to be right.

Part of the fear that they'd make things worse is their fault for how they acted earlier in the crisis (and that one of their ranks killed the guy), so can't look past that, but part of that is a segment of the crowd protesting seems like they're thirsting for confrontation. For as much as the cops have botched this from the beginning, let's not trip over ourselves too much excusing the people in the crowd of protesters who are actively trying to escalate shit.

please, if anyone is "tripping over themselves" to excuse someone, it's you for the cops. instead of going after the isolated incidents of looting idiots throwing bottles/rocks they're rolling up with tanks in military gear while launching flash bombs and tear gas into a largely peaceful protest. if they really want to let people police themselves, why do they have to have a big menacing force there? don't they know by now that these people don't trust the police(and who could blame them at this point?). They're not making these people safe, especially not in their military style armor and vehicles.

bottom line, either they're doing what you said, which is immensely dumb, because it's only made things worse; or they're intentionally trying to stir shit and cause a real riot to absolve themselves in a way. either they're morons or scumbags.

nobody is saying that these people who are looting and throwing shit at cops aren't a part of the problem, either. however, we're looking at a big militarized force, who is supposed to protect the community, completely taking advantage of a poor, black community, going as far as shooting a kid they thought that might have robbed a fucking convenience store for fucking candy for fuck sake. on the other side you have a few idiots looting and throwing bottles. which is the real issue here?
