Ruf is legitimately awful in the OF and defense was historically bad last year. They can't do that again. Not suggesting Abreu is some kind of defensive upgrade, but as long as there's $25m sitting at 1B, Ruf's upside is as a platoon player.

Ok, I didn't realize he was THAT bad defensively, probably because the whole team was awful defensively last year. In fact, it may have been the worst defensive team the Phillies have fielded in my lifetime, and I'm old.

Still, I don't care if Ruf starts, just that he gets ABs in situations where he might be useful. I'm concerned he's going to end up in AAA with Mayberry and Abreu also on the team.
