there's probably an autocomplete function for hashtags on whatever platform he's using. #hugetits is probably a lot more commonly used on twitter than anything else starting with #huge

no offense but you are everything that's wrong with America

I know Reyes cut off his dreads for charity but what's up with his hair now? Saw him on the dugout steps after someone else's HR on the Jays (Rasmus maybe) and he just has a patch of hair on the back of his head

I just finished Trading Bases by Joe Peta. He was a high level Wall Street trader and lifelong Phillies fan who was injured in an accident and lost his job, so he spent 2011-12 perfecting a formula predicting baseball results. I thought about putting these comments in Book? Let's thread but it's so baseball related here are my brief thoughts.

According to the book, Peta earned healthy betting profits in both seasons using his formula. It was excellent at predicting season over/unders as well as individual games all the way through the World Series. He doesn't explicitly lay out the formula but it uses pythagorean W-L along with advanced stats such as WAR and SIERA.

He does a nice job drawing comparisons between sports betting and Wall Street investing. Mainly how the more you take emotion out and put repeatable science (SABR) in, the better your results. Also how the true money isn't so much what you bet on, but how to determine your betting amounts.

The best parts to me were the frequent criticism of managers' in-game decisions (you know, The Book) that fly in the face of expert analysis; as well as his assessment of Vegas sports books being horribly run from a business standpoint. He likens them to pre-internet Nasdaq, in that they act like they don't even want their own customers, much less to improve their experience and investments.

Philadelphia and its teams come up often but don't dominate the book. Peta moved away after college. He did work for former PSU NT Matt Johnson at Lehman/Barclays. Also MattS gets a few shoutouts. Overall a quick, enjoyable read. It won't break new ground if you follow advanced stats but does affirm their relevance.

The Endless Summer Of Bob Uecker

"Looking out at downtown Philadelphia here in the background," Uecker says to listeners on 36 stations in Wisconsin and one on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, as well as on MLB.com and Sirius XM. "Looking alllll the way up the shoreline. Atlantic City, people in the water up there. Boy, what a sight." Uecker's pitch recognition skills were such that he batted .200 in six seasons as a major league catcher, but at 78 he apparently is telescopic, able to spot details more than 60 miles away—or decades back in time. "500 Club in the background," Uecker says, name-checking the classic A.C. nightspot that burned down in 1973. "Boats. Sailfish.... Octopus."

Gonna have to take your word for it, Uke. "The pitch, swing and a bouncer hit to first. There's Betancourt. Yuni B. takes care of Ben Revere." I can confirm, from over Uecker's shoulder, that Milwaukee's Yuniesky Betancourt, undistracted by mollusks, logs the out 3-unassisted.

"Amazing," Uecker says, "what you can see when you want to."
"Everybody's a critic. This wasn't an aesthetic endeavor."

He's gone, given unconditional release.

Also wiggington was an all-star in 2010, again, Ty Wiggington was an all-star in 2010.
