You are correct, and catchers generally can play other positions with ease. You get use to hard throws, bad throws, people blocking your view, getting run over/into, etc. Playing the OF is like a vacation, and playing on the base paths is like moving from an apartment to a warehouse. The only adjustment is that in the infield you do not need to throw so hard to get the ball where it needs to go.

He batted .350/.434/.544 in 206 AB as a Junior this season. Are you looking at the sophomore numbers?

Damnit he wasn't prolific as a 15 year old, I hope he doesn't sign.

You're famous, Ed.

Shane Watson and JP Crawford as Tee-Ballers

Posted by ZWR at 12:14 pm

Phillies 2012 top pick Shane Watson tweeted this picture of himself and Phillies 2013 first round pick JP Crawford from their tee-ball days, and it’s awesome.

BTW I got this tip from Big Ed on Backshegoes.com

Isn't it pretty common that guys who play catcher at one level simply can't do it at the majors for one reason or another?

i think it means that crawford is gonna play SS and that his drafting has no bearing on what they are going to do with quinn

Quinn was a CF/SS in high school, and some were wondering if he was gonna be moved back to center to make room for Crawford since they'll likely be on the same teams coming up through the system

I think catcher is about a billion times harder at the speed of the professional game and the ability to mentally call a solid game is much more difficult when you see teams and players repetitively. As a catcher you build very portable tools: Strong arm, accurate throws, good game sense, etc. which are attributes across the game. The fat kid is not just stuck behind the plate anymore. You can, and teams have, plug that in all over the place. I think that shortstop and center field might be the most unlikely landing zones for an ex-catcher, but everything else is potentially on the table.

I would also hazard a guess that it's impossible to project the ability to call a major league game.

Round 3A = Cord Sandberg, OF, Manatee HS (FL)

Mississippi State QB commit

A two-sport star from the Florida high school ranks, Sandberg has the chance to quarterback at Mississippi State should he choose to go that route. He also has the chance to be a very good, toolsy outfielder at the professional level. A line-drive gap hitter now, Sandberg projects to have above-average power from the left side of the plate in the future. He runs well and should be a good defensive outfielder. With a big, athletic frame, he reminds some of Josh Hamilton in terms of his body type. Sandberg will get the chance to show how close he can get to being a similar player if he chooses the diamond over the gridiron.

If the Phils take a cheap sign with one of these next few picks, it will be a good indication of how serious they are about signing him.
