JFLNYC wrote:I'm pumped about this draft. Crawford doesn't really float my boat, but the rest of the position players look solid to potentially really good. Combined with how the guys are raking down in Clearwater and things look promising down the road. Obviously it's going to take a few years, but at least our system now seems to have some real hitting prospects.

Then again, I don't know shit.

No one knows anything about this stuff. That's what makes it so fun. I think this draft will go down in history as the key to the powerhouse
Phillie teams of the late decade. Why not. These guys are all dominate right now.

It's really fun to look at past drafts and wonder what all the excitement was about Shawn Abner and stuff. Also the old draft threads are funny.

Round 18 = Dan Child, RHP, Oregon State

bio

Twitter @Dan_Child

Image

Coming off a stint with the college national team last summer, Child entered his junior season as a highly regarded college pitcher. But Child, a right-hander, was shaky at the start of the season and lost his spot in Oregon State's weekend rotation. Still, he presents an intriguing package to scouts. At 6-foot-5, 225 pounds, Child has a power-pitcher's frame and mentality. He throws in the low- to mid-90s with a hard slider and a changeup he rarely uses. Child may fit better in the bullpen, where he could ditch the changeup and likely develop into a late-inning power reliever.

Reunited with his teammate Wetzler

Round 30 = Venn Biter, OF, Rossview HS (TN)

bio

Twitter @Venn_Biter_23

UAB commit

"We first saw Venn at the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Top Upperclassmen event, and immediately targeted him as the outfielder we would love to have in this recruiting class," head coach Brian Shoop said. "Venn was exactly what we were looking for -- a left-handed hitter who can run, hit for power and who can also defend the field at a high level. We really believe that there was no better fit as a player at UAB than Venn and we have to no doubt that he will have a great college career as a Blazer before he begins his professional career."

Biter was a key contributor in Rossview winning back-to-back District and Tournament Championships the past two seasons, along with a runner up finish in the Regional Tournament. During the 2012 season, Biter garnered 10 AAA All-District Team honors and was named to the The Leaf - Chronicle All-Area Team.

The Blazers recruited him as a centerfielder and with a shot at batting in the leadoff position or No. 2 hole in their lineup eventually.

"I don't want all of this to go to my head," Biter said. "I still have a ton of room for improvement and I know I can get better. All this stuff has been nice and it's been a crazy ride the past few months but I have to remain grounded and understand I haven't done anything yet."
