Stark is BACK IN!

But wait. The Phillies can top that. They were 13½ out in that very same race, for that very same second-wild-card spot, on Aug. 8. So if they make the playoffs, they'll be in totally uncharted territory -- because no team has ever trailed by that many games on Aug. 8 or later and made it to the postseason.

• And if the Phillies somehow complete this comeback, they'd be only the third team in history to play a postseason game after trailing by 13½ games at any point in a season. Anybody remember the other two teams? That would be Possum Whitted's 1914 "Miracle" Braves (15 back on July 5) and Reginald M. Jackson's 1978 Yankees (14 out on July 19).

• But hold on. We're still not through. The Phillies were 10 games behind the Cardinals as recently as Aug. 29. (Yep, that was 15 games ago.) So how many teams have ever trailed by double digits as late in the calendar year as Aug. 29 and survived to play in the postseason? Not a one. Here's that leader board:

2011 Cardinals -- 10 out on Aug. 27*
1995 Mariners -- 10½ out on Aug. 25
1964 Cardinals -- 10 out on Aug. 24
* in wild-card race

It actually may be harder to come back in the WC, because you're passing more teams with the potential to get hot. We needed the Cardinals , Pirates, and the Dodgers to play like crap lately to catch up. In a divisional race, you only have to pass 1 team, and you'll play them head to head in the last month.

So are the unwashed gonna credit CHUCK for keeping the team on track this summer or bash him for not caring enough in May/June? Seems like the latter thus far

Which I believe consisted mostly of "well this guy isn't getting anyone out" and taking him out after 1 batter instead of 5

If Cliff Lee still lived in his hometown, this would be his state rep. She's Republican, teaches poli sci at University Arkansas-Little Rock, and was hotter before she got a Palin-style makeover.

Speaking of Possums, that guy only batted 218 times for the Miracle Braves in 1914. I guess he gets the mention because he was a regular for the NL Champ Phil's in 1915. The Braves were in last place on July 4th but went 70-19 in their last 89 games to win the league easily by 10 1/2 games and then sweep the vaunted A's in four straight in the WS.

I wonder what Baumann's great grand pap was saying in July regarding the Braves' chances.

The Phillies later traded Possum for Casey Stengel'!!!
