Have any of the beat writers said anything about this today on Twitter - the skipped start, not the MRI - or are they all passed out drunk in an alley?

Cole's GB/FB is 1.65 this year. His average is 1.13. God damn.

I really should know this, but does a cutter dive at all? Keeping his FB lower may help insulate against when he elevates a dead fish.

The theory is the late movement keeps a hitter from squaring it up, so instead of making good contact it's "in on the hands" to use a wheelsism. To wit, his cutter generates GBs at a 63.5% clip against RHB, which is sort of the point of throwing it as a LHP right?

Yup, I'm pretty sure that's why he developed it, and it's why he's a pretty elite pitcher now. He has dropped about a K/9 from last year to only 8.1, only down about 0.4 from his average. But, his walks are also down 0.8 from last year and 0.4 from his average as well. That offset coupled with his huge rise in GBs has made him a monster.

He's at 8.1 k/9, 1.8 bb/9, 52.7% GB, 6.7% HR/FB.

For example Doc is 8.4, 1.1, 52.0%, 5.8%. He's just ridiculous.

Yeah I think he throws it with a two-seam grip so that would cause a bit of sink to it. to my eye it seems to dive a bit more than, say, Roy's which just seems like it takes a left turn. i'm sure there's charts someone can pull that can confirm this, or make me look like an asshole

Per fangraphs:
horizontal/vertical movement on the cutter
Hamels: -0.8, 7.2
Halladay: -1.1, 5.4

pitchFx is basically the difference between where the ball would appear to be headed versus where it winds up basically right?

I always guessed that it's where the pitch would end up based on initial vertical and horizontal velocity. So yeah, basically.

SO WHAT DO THOSE NUMBERS MEAN. What does 7 vs. 5 (y-axis?)indicate?

Inches away from where a straight pitch would go, I'd guess.
