That analysis notwithstanding, the Braves are going to be tough this year.

Yeah. I'm not sure it was an analysis. I'm not sure what it was. But the Braves aren't too bad are they?

They sure look good. But while he was mentioning how old the Phillies pitchers will be in a few years, it might have been a good time to note that Lowe and Hudson will be 38 and 35 this very year. No reason to expect they won't be quite good this year, except for the fact that at some time, they won't.

Wish we had some of their young 'uns though. Or Utley.

Utley cures all ills I'd say.

what about chone figgins?

the mariners are a sinking ship. they have ackley to play 2B, and that means Figgins would likely be going back to 3B. They also have Alex Liddi who will be ready in 2012.

Figgins of course had a pretty lousy 2010 season. .314 BABIP, but his career mark is higher at .337. He still stole 42 bases and drew 74 walks. .302 wOBA, with Bill James and Marcel both predicting a rebound.

He was a below average defender at 2B, but hes an above average 3B.

4 years/$36M (2010-13), plus 2014 option
signed by Seattle as a free agent 12/8/09
$2M signing bonus
11:$9M, 12:$9M, 13:$8M, 14:$9M vesting option
2014 option guaranteed with 600 PAs in 2013

If we trade Blanton for Figgins, its almost a straight salary swap in 2011 and 2012. His salary actually goes down in 2013, and at that point Polanco's contract will be up and he can play 3B. He's already like Polanco, except with less power (amazingly) and a lot more speed.

Blanton would be a great fit in that park.

Thoughts?

edit --> and Figgins has also played the OF as well. 307 games.

I'd do that. Mariners might like clearing out the extra year of the contract too. Also, Figgins might be able to play SS in a pinch too since he's done it in the past.

If Utley's fully healthy, Figgins can probably slot into a super-utility role including playing some LF against lefties. Still would play 120+ games in that role.

Think the Mariners would go for it? Would they want more than just Blanton even though they shed some salary obligation out of it?
