Random Phillies Stuff

To be fair, all I'm suggesting that because you can measure a player's offensive contribution by looking at the outcome of an at bat, and those outcomes are entirely objective--hit, walk, strike out, etc. Moreover, advanced statistics tell us pretty clearly how those events contribute to scoring runs and winning games.

Defense, by contrast is tough. At some point, subjective judgment enters into calculations. Errors are usually obvious, but how do you measure how great a great defensive play is? As you note, sometimes a stolen base is the pitcher's fault, and every once in awhile, it's the infielder's fault.

Sometimes, a fielder needs to make a great play because of a bad throw.
Sometimes, a play looks routine because of the fielder's position.

They fell to the Yankees in last year's World Series, but behind ace Roy Halladay, the Phillies have replaced the Yanks atop the PowerRankings

I'm sitting here watching the Marlins game, bored, so I threw together a few numbers

Through 7 games opposing starters have averaged:

13.14 outs recorded
86.14 pitches thrown
4.29 earned runs
6.43 hits
2.57 walks

So they're averaging four and a third innings a start. 8.80 ERA, 2.05 WHIP, 19.7 pitches per inning.

That's got to be a little intimidating. You should print that up in some scary looking font, and maybe add some scary graphics and send it to all the pitchers in the National League.

Yeah it's also a product of facing some real turds the first week of the season, although I expect we'll get after Stammen more than we did the first time around on Wednesday. Maybe push the starters ERA to over 9.

Not entirely related, but today was quite a day for us if you pretend that Rollins thing didn't happen. Win the home opener for the first time in forever, Braves embarrassed, Fish lose.

"Blew out" is a very technical medical term, to be fair.

It's going to take a while before I read Beard in relation to a Phillie and think Werth instead of Bruntlett. Like probably forever.

I don't know if this is the best thread to talk about the roster and injuries and whatnot, but Murphy is tweeting up a storm of speculation on Rollins

If they expect Rollins to be gone for much more than 15 days, I could see them promoting Valdez, the better def. at SS. Not Ransom though
2 minutes ago via web
But Ransom doesn't have options, so he'd still have to be DFA'ed RT @FrankKlose They still have a 40-man spot left
10 minutes ago via web
@CMSBMatty Yeah, Ransom and Valdez would have to be exposed to waivers on their trips back down. This is why the Phils signed Castro.
about 1 hour ago via web in reply to CMSBMatty
Logic: if Werth is out 5-6 days w/ no DL, Mayberry would make sense as RHB on bench. Polly can play SS for a few innings @jjacobsohn
about 1 hour ago via web
On 2nd thought, maybe I'm not almost positive it will be Mayberry. With Bocock on the 40, it's probably him. @CMSBMatty
about 1 hour ago via web
Though Bocock is def. the other option, since he's 40 man and can play SS. Depends if they're comfortable w/ Polanco as emergency SS.
about 1 hour ago via web
Almost positive the move is Mayberry. Could be in line-up tom. vs. S. Olsen @CMSBMatty You mean like Brian Bockock being called up?
about 1 hour ago via web
Not expecting anything 'til 5 or 6 at earliest. Roster move logistics take time. RT @dochammy No MRI news on J-Roll yet?

Iron Pigs are home tomorrow, so any call-up would be a turnpike ride away.

So are the R-Phils, FWIW, but I can't imagine anybody getting the call from there.

Rox give Tulo to Phils in exchange for Ruben's solemn promise to leave Denver's virgins untouched.

Still, the naysayers will have to be persuaded. Baseball America, a respected surveyor of minor league talent, recently announced their top 100 major league prospects and the Phils had but two, lefty hurlers Cole Hamels and Giovany Gonzalez. All well and good, but unless my instincts betray me, they will have to one day apologize for the oversight in not placing Mike Costanzo, Jr. on this list. His pedigree is too impressive, the synchronicity of it all too transparent.
