Your favorite Harry calls

Postby philliesphhan » Tue Apr 14, 2009 00:40:30

I've always liked his slow build calls just as much as towering home run calls.

From this game, bottom of the ninth, and checking the 2007 DVD, it was the Christmas in July game. This first part was great:

"Fly ball in the gap in left center field...it's deep, and it is...(as two Nationals sort of bump into each other and don't catch the ball) dropped out there! And J-Roll is gonna end up at third base and the Phillies are still alive (ball gets away from cutoff man) and he's gonna try to score, and HE'S SAFE AT HOME PLATE! THIS GAME IS TIED! UNBELIEVABLE! HERE IN THE NINTH INNING! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?"

but I like the second part even more, which isn't on the DVD, but I wrote it one down on a sticky note after he said, and I'm glad I never threw it away:

"We'll have to see how they score it, but we don't care because it's tied!"

This was the game we won on a mammoth walkoff HR by Howard in the 14th.

I loved the call of the Biggio home run off Wagner after the David Bell error on 9/7/05 that ultimately cost the Phillies a trip to the postseason in 2005. The despondence perfectly echoed what was going through my head: "Oh, no... three run home run, Craig Biggio..."

God, I remember that call like it was yesterday.

It was exactly what everybody was thinking. "Oh no..."

So, I wanted to listen to some classic Harry, so I put on this game which I recorded off ESPN Classic last year. Rick Schu comes in for Schmidt late in the game cause it's a blowout, and he gets a groundball hit to him at third. He goes to throw and kinda trips on his own feet. They show the replay and Whitey laughs and says "He was like a dancing bear out there." :)

I was at the game so I never got to hear that call :(

it's simple and not really a call, but I loved how at the end of a game that ended after midnight on the east coast as he signed off the broadcast he'd say "good morning everyone". It was just the way he'd say.

Yeah...he did some form of that after every game & I would always answer back, "good morning Harry"...

Why was this game on ESPN Classic? And fuck Comcast for not giving it to me without buying the next stupid tier.

Earlier, I heard on WIP Harry going bat shit over Jeff Grotewold's third consecutive pinch hit home run. I love that. It not only reveals his fanaticism but reminds me how bad most of our teams were; how relatively innocuous their achievements were. Yet we had Harry to be proud of.

Obviously a lot of the great calls have been mentioned. My favorite memories of him aren't really specific calls, just the way he called a regular game. His voice was soothing, and even as he began to slip up (and it was frustrating sometimes, especially the HR headfakes), he still had that soothing voice. I used to love the "Shallow Thoughts with LA" segment of the broadcasts.

This one is pretty freaking awesome. Burrell's walkoff last year, complete with Harry getting downright giddy when saying Pat's name:

Another similar call came when the Phillies blew this game to the Yankees in 1998. The Phillies had leads of 5-0 and 7-2, and were still up 8-5 going into the ninth.

Mark Leiter, who had recorded the final out of the eighth, got the first two batters out in the ninth before giving up a double to Derek Jeter and a walk to Paul O'Neill. That set the stage for Tino Martinez, who drilled a Leiter offering deep into the upper deck seats in right field.

Harry's call? "Oh no...tie game."

This was back when I briefly had ESPN Classic and then they took it away. I'm not sure why it was on, but it's probably for one of two reasons: Schmidt got his career 2000th hit or because he hit 3 home runs in the game.

I like a lot of his calls from the 80 playoffs, even the phony ones he did for the World Series.

Or both? I think I actually remember that game happening. Wow. I wish I'd seen that!

the all-time greatest thing had to be the trivia questions with whitey:

RA: How about that...Sixto Lezcano?
HK: Sixto Lexcano would be a good guess but INCORRECT.
RA: Oh boy...well, it had to be...was it...that Len Matuzak?
HK: That is CORRECT. Lenny Matuzak in 1986...

Another guy in college and I used to have a whole routine worked up based on those exchanges. They were absolute gold to listen to.

two notes in regard to that page-

Musser's call of Schmidt's HR in Montreal is my favorite non-Harry call of all time

Joe Garagiola is a boob
