I was attended this Maddux versus Maddux game back in '88:

Of course we had the wrong Maddux.

I never liked Greg, he epitomizes douche IMO.[/url]

As referenced in the first post in this thread, I was at that game, too. It was my first ever Phillies game.

I always liked Greg Maddux. Always seemed like a good guy to me and I was always amazed at the seasons he put up in the mid '90s. Great, great pitcher, but never a guy who had a reputation as a great big game pitcher.

That shirt MJ is wearing is a crime.
they were a chick hanging out with her friends at a bar, the Phillies would be the 320 lb chick with a nose wart and a dick - Trent Steele

Yeah, he looks like Bill Cosby in that thing. Very early 90s.

Best television commercial I ever saw involving a sports figure I saw only once, and I don't remember what it was for (ESPN?). the commercial starred Kareem Abdul Jabbar, sitting on a bench in his Lakers uniform, with this kid next to him. The kid is staring at him as the commercial opens, and Kareem looks a little uncomfortable, and finally the kid says, "I know you. You're Roger Murdoch, the airline pilot!" Kareem corrects him, of course: "I don't know what you're talking about kid. I'm Kareem Abdul Jabbar. I'm a basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers." Of course the kid answers, "I think you're the greatest, but my Dad says you couldn't land a twin engine prop plane on the widest runway in America..." or something like that, you get the idea.

It was quite amusing.

There are a million things to impress you when looking at his career stats, but I think I'm most awed by a 1.14 career WHIP over 5000 innings. He's 52nd all time in WHIP, but to have done it in this era with that many innings pitched is ridiculous. If you weighted his WHIP to take the era and innings pitched into account, I've got to think it ranks in the top 10.

For comparison, Pedro's career WHIP is .09 better than Maddux, but in 2300 fewer innings. Santana is about .04 better in 3500 fewer innings and Schilling .01 better in 1800 fewer innings. Randy Johnson is .02 worse in 1000 fewer innings.

*Something else to be impressed by: if you give him the benefit of 2/3 of an inning pitched in 2002, he'd have 19 consecutive 200 inning seasons. As it stands he had a 14 year streak. The 19 year streak ended with seasons of 198 and 194 IP. His average IP/season=229.

What a great pitcher. I argue with my dad all the time that he is the greatest RHP ever. I still remember sitting in the Vet and being all excited about the Phils new uniforms and he goes and breaks Dykstra's forearm with one of the first pitches of the game.

[anecdotes]

When I was younger, I was obsessed with Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz. I went to at least two Braves games every year specifically picking the games when I knew one of the three would be starting. I've "met" them numerous times and all three are wonderful people. Maddux and Glavine in particular, I remember talking with both of them as they signed autographs at the Vet. Glavine talked with me about his book and Maddux gave me motivational advice as I was still playing baseball back then.

My dad and I used to collect autographs and we probably had more Maddux/Glavine/Smoltz stuff than Phillies stuff. We went to the Tuff Stuff convention in Virginia (not sure if they still do it or if they don't, when they stopped it) and "met" them (along with Rafael Furcal and Chipper Jones at the airport) again.

[/anecdotes]

Maddux is probably my favorite non-Phillie of all time. Honestly, I think he still has enough left in the tank to be productive but it's probably best he go out having put up a 90+ ERA+ in every season excluding his rookie and sophomore years, and his last two the only ones not in triple-digits.

Heh, I remember sometime in the mid 90s watching a braves game, and maddux was cruising through it nicely, but the braves weren't scoring. He gets taken out, the bullpen blows the lead and it switches back to a fuming maddux screaming 'fuck' in the dugout. I was so used to see him being mister calm and focused on the mound that I thought this was the greatest thing ever.
