"In recent days, several team insiders have said that assistant general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. is expected to get the job, and that an announcement from Phillies president David Montgomery could come within 24 to 48 hours after the conclusion of the World Series or after Gillick's contract expires."

Well, despite how maligned Amaro has been by the Phillies' fandom since the Wade era the guy probably played a significant role in the construction of our soon to be World Champs. This may end up being a positive hiring.

The only way to fix the karma is to now announce his firing.

Am I the only one who really doesn't care what the Phillies do next year as long as the win the World Series this year?

Amaro is just such a smug prick I get angry listening to him give a light-hearted interview when we're about the win the world series. He just has a way of communicating in condescending tones that makes you want to ball your fist and punch things. I fear his arrogance as GM of the Phils

I'll probably feel that way for a week or so, then go back to caring. Albeit with less of an edge.

I care. Because I dont want to hear the "fluke" word thrown around. It obviously will be.

In fairness, the Phillies were able to overcome perhaps the single worst rendition of the National Anthem ever performed last night....

It doesn't work like that. You'd think it does, but then they start playing games again, and it sucks you back in.

It does make a difference, though. Once you've actually witnessed the Phils winning a WS, your perspective changes.

In any event, Amaro will be tested right away. It's not so easy to take over a champion because the only direction is down. He's got to deal with LF, find another reliever or two and possibly another starter. He's got to deal with the Howard and Hamels contracts, plus the fact that Myers is in the last year of his contract, too. It will be telling to see the extent to which (if at all) he challenges ownership to make the necessary investment to maintain excellence or if he just sucks up to them, tells them what they want to hear and settles for patchwork solutions.

Whatever your opinion of Gillick, he's left the next GM in a pretty decent position. He's got a couple of decent ML prospects and they just had a great draft. The Eaton and Jenkins deals suck for 2009, but he hasn't left any bad contracts beyond that. Amaro will have to be creative to deal with the payroll for 2009. But beyond that he's really got no excuses.

Hmm. Maybe well-planned timing on the phillies' part, thinking that the imminent euphoria will alleviate any potential backlash  :?:

I doubt the PTB even have a clue there would be any backlash.

I tend to agree, but sometimes people can surprise you once they're given a top job. I'm probably just being hopelessly optimistic, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now. With so many important decisions to make this off-season, it will be easy to make a judgment by spring training.
