Fictional 2014 Phillies roster

Just wanted to see how the prospects we often discuss would get shoe-horned into a 25-man roster 5-6 years from now and where our depth is. Assumes no players past arbitration today remain on team and no players acquired.

This shows obvious depth in outfield and starting pitching. Also, if Utley and Rollins are still on this fictional team, replacing Donald and Galvis (see below), the hitting stays near the top of the NL, IMO. Without them, it is closer to middle of the pack. The biggest upgrade potential is in starting pitching, both in elevating the quality of the starting five and depth in the system.

This is like predicting the weather a month from now.

I'd be surprised if as many as five of the 25 players on your hypothetical 25-man roster are actually on the Phillies in 2014.

I pretty much agree with this. For instance, here is the list of players on the 2003 roster that are still on the '08 roster are:

Considering the fact that you have minor leaguers on your hypothetical roster, you could technically add Ryan Howard, Carlos Ruiz & Kyle Kendrick to this 2003 list.

How many of these 5 will still be on the team next year? I'd say Burrell and Madson are gone.

Quite aware of that possibility, but nothing is a certainty. Anyway, I did this acccording to a rule--only those still in arb years or younger.

Again, this is an exercise, not a prediction of what will be. It is to illustrate where we have depth and provide a baseline picture of how the farm system will supply players. You then go from there to figure out what directions you will acquire from other sources, such as 3B.

OK, I tried. What I found out is no one knows the difference between an exercise and a prediction, even when you use the word "fictitious." I'll try someplace with brains.
