It's because we don't have brains to grasp things like these.

Calm down man. How do you expect us to predict 6 seasons from now? There are so many variables. We don't know what prospects will pan out, what new ones will enter the picture. You still Ryan Howard in the mix, and there are many people that aren't even sure he'll be here next year, let alone in 6. Given the clues he's given to how much dough he'll want in 3 years and that he'll be 29 this November -- it's a long shot to imagine him on that roster.

What do you mean fictitious? We can all make stuff up. Doyou want a realistic guess about who will emerge from the farm? Don't forget injury and decline. 4 years ago no one would have imagined Abreu in decline or being traded for a sack of dirt.

My "fictional" lineup

1B Abraham Barry
2B Basil Hickman
SS Clair Jermaine Olson
3B Dannie Lloyd
C Dante Pearson
LF Darrell Guzman
CF Dirk Juan Emerson
RF Duane Andrea Stevenson

Pitchers:
Abram Arnold
Allen Pacheco
Arturo Bolton
Bo Hogan
Cruz Will Franks

Interesting exercise. I found this random name generator to be useful

Congratulations in the future to Clair Jermaine Olson for breaking the gender barrier. Hopefully this advance knowledge doesn't put that distinction in jeopardy.

This is something that's done every year by baseball america, I dunno why everyone thinks it's so ridiculous. Here is their projection of the 2011 Phillies:

PROJECTED 2011
LINEUP
Catcher Lou Marson
First Base Ryan Howard
Second Base Chase Utley
Third Base Travis Mattair
Shortstop Jimmy Rollins
Left Field Pat Burrell
Center Field Dominic Brown
Right Field Adrian Cardenas

No. 2 Starter Brett Myers
No. 3 Starter Carlos Carrasco
No. 4 Starter Joe Savery
No. 5 Starter Josh Outman
Closer Brad Lidge

Thanks for the knowledgeable response, BGF. It's a worthwhile exercise to speculate and project what a team would be with only home-grown at any specific time in the future. It then gives you a baseline to figure out where you are deep and where you might need to reallocate resources (FA, Rule 5, trades). This is something I am sure good organizations do in their winter meetings. Nice to have another person who a) can understand what I clearly communicated in a bout 6 different ways and b) does not come to forums to enjoy dissing others just for the hell of it.

No, it's pointless -- it doesn't tell you anything you shouldn't already know, if you follow the minors closely. I don't follow them all that closely, but nevertheless I don't need to make empty projections to know that the Phils have impressive depth at C, or are very thin at 3B (for instance).

The only thing this thread has done for me is reiterate that projections for a large market team are stupid and that I'd rather have Outman and Cardenas than Blanton.

i, too, enjoy making disparaging remarks about the comprehension of others and not being able to spell 'about' correctly in the same sentence
