Hell of a $#@! story.
I was able to see the whole thing live on Canadian TV. Fantastic match as all of the volleyball games were.
It's interesting that I I had this image of hat volleyball players look like -- you know, California beach type guys. Well the US men didn't look like volleyball players. They looked like a gang of demented paratroopers.
But they played great. There were alot of GREAT long rallies and gobs of fantastic plays by both teams. But no one was going to deny the Americans in this Olympics. A heckuva story and a great team.
There was a guy from my high school who graduated a couple years before me who was a pro volleyball player in Europe. I'm from PA. I would think Cali has a high percentage of the elite vbers, but not all

A lot of the men's team is indeed form the midwest originally and they even have a guy from Hawaii. I think most of them went to college in California from my quick look at the bios. The do, however, look like demented paratroopers.

Men's volleyball at the collegiate level only has three conferences (MIVA, EIVA, MPSF). It's basically PSU and four or five teams from the MPSF (west coast schools) that compete for the national title. I think the reason for the lack of traditional conferences has to do with Title IX.
EDIT: There are no Big XII school that I know of, but it's a pretty good women's volleyball conference.
