Your feelings about the 2008 Phillies

Postby TenuredVulture » Wed Mar 12, 2008 11:52:51

Opening day is not that far off.

This is a repeat of a poll I ran last year about this time, except for the reference to the Cardinals.

viewtopic.php_t=1037

I know there's still a possibility that we may sign Lohse, so, you may want to hold off. On the other hand, this isn't really a "prediction" poll, it's more about your mood. (In the original poll, you could consider choices 3,4,5,and 6 as correct--it's about impressions) If you think in the end, they're going to sign Lohse and he'll pitch well, you'd be optimistic. And so forth.

80-84 wins. Other than Howard and Myers, everything I'm seeing and hearing is negative.

I'm still riding the high of having made the playoffs last year, and I'm only looking at the bright side of every roster move/non-move they made in the off-season. I can't help it.

Caustically optimistic here.

Here, here, very optimistic! Me and the Pear Jam flying skeleton agree (Do the Evolution).

I have the Tigers facing the Phils in the World Series.

I'm optimistic about their Wild Card potential, but I just don't think they'll topple Johan Santana and the Mets, despite their injury problems. The Phillies' pitching will cripple them in the long run, as it always does.

The entire starting rotation is a question mark:

Hamels: Injuries
Myers: Returning to the rotation again
Moyer: Old
Kendrick: Bad spring training
Eaton: Horrible, back problems
Benson: Hasn't pitched above the league average since 2000

Their offense will be NL-best again, but it'll only bring them to 90 wins at most. I think the Mets will win 94-ish.

But seriously, in what month will Santana get injured?

Judging by their Grapefruit League record, the Phils aren't playing baseball.

Judging by recent history, they won't start playing baseball for another 6 or 7 weeks.

Sooo...

I haven't been following the game by game action of spring training. 4-10 really doesn't mean anything, but the fact that division rivals Mets, Braves, and Fish are 3, 4, 5 (top NL teams) in the grapefruit league is mildly unnerving.

And other troubling stuff--Feliz is hitting a decent .310. Unfortunately, his OBP is also .310. And he's one of the better performers this spring.

On the plus side, Rosario has had some good outings. As does Myers. So there's that going for us.

see I misread this, and thought you were so out of your mind with frustration that you were offering Oral gratis for all those (not so) poor, tired, servicers of politicians.

This is the first year that I have applied my TINSTAST theory, and it's working well. I'm not watching any games, I'm not reading reports in depth, I'm not looking at Kendrick's current k/9 ratio (last year is bad enough, thank you), so I'm okay. Combined with a stoic acceptance that april will suck, because april always does, I reckon I'll be okay till late June.

I like your professional approach. You clearly spectate the game the right way.

I'm making my forecast based on performance in the 1st 7 of the last 11 spring training games.

Someone please notify me when that stretch of play commences (even if it has already).
